Q&A for Steve Kan tuning session in Albuquerque

I decided that it was time for a new thread since the time to join in has ended and all participants have either paid, or missed out.

This thread is to answer any questions that anybody might have, as well as to help provide Steve with the clearest possible picture of what to expect in terms of our setups so that we can all get the most out of this as easily as possible.

Below is the latest information from the Gotham Racing sub-forum

"
$350 - Stock turbo up to 12psi of boost (pump gas only) 1 map
$400 - aftermarket turbo up to 16psi of boost (pump gas only) 1 map
$450 - aftermarket turbo from 16psi - 25psi of boost (race gas and/or auxiliary injection only) 1 map
$600 - aftermarket turbo up to 25psi of boost (pump gas and race gas tune) 2 maps

Here is the estimated time frame allocated for each type of tuning.

stock turbo - 45 mins - 1.5 hrs
aftermarket turbo (pump gas) 1hr - 2.5 hrs
aftermarket turbo (race gas and/or auxiliary injection) 2 - 4hrs
aftermarket turbo (2 maps) 3-6 hrs
"

Everyone please take the time to select exactly which type of tuning you will be needing and post it here so that he can budget his time and plan accordingly.

Only 2 people involved aren't forum members, so I will speak with and for them.

Thanks everybody for your participation and finally making this a reality.
ryan

I personally will be in for the
"$600 - aftermarket turbo up to 25psi of boost (pump gas and race gas tune) 2 maps"

One conservative pump gas tune (likely still using AI for added safety) ~10psi
One aggressive pump gas with AI tune ~25psi

Setup in my sig

I'm up for the: $400 - aftermarket turbo up to 16psi of boost (pump gas only) 1 map (I don't think I can squeeze into the $350 rate - lol)
Setup follows:
1988 10AE RX-7 with JDM RE twin turbo conversion (stock-no port)
Microtec LT-8S
Wideband O2 sensor
Water to air intercooler
Greddy Boost controller Profec B
Air conditioner & Power steering (this the intercooler)
All smog removed
Thanks to Ryan for setting this up. Everyone is excited about the opportunity.

I will be going with
$600 -aftermarket turbo up to 25psi(pump&race gas) 2maps
1 pump gas tune- probably around 14psi
and 1 race gas tune- around 20psi (depending on what steve thinks is still safe)

this will be with the aspec-gt3540r 1600cc secondaries and the pfc on the 13brew with stock ports

Holy crap.... 3 rotor at 25 psi with AI on pump gas? Is that 91 or 93 octane? I'm suprised that Steve would agree to tune that high (even with AI) on pump gas. Hope you can get there. Should be a pretty impressive number! Sounds like a very nice setup. Did you build the car yourself of was Gotham involved?

Good luck everyone with your tuning session. Steve's been to Phoenix several times and does a GREAT job!

91 octane. . .

If he doesn't want to go that high, I don't either. . .I guess I just wanna go as high as he wants to

Gotham wasn't involvedwith the buildup, but to say I built it myself would be failing to give credit where credit's due. . .RotaryRx, Inc. played a major role, Tommy is a great rotary mechanic and a great friend and it wouldn't be possible without him

plus help from forum members with advice, other friends with just a hand around the garage. . .i don't think anyone builds a car ALL by themselves.

Hey guys.. steve would like to know a few things from us. He would like to know:
Whether you want Street or Dyno tune
and
How many miles your motor has

He perfers to street tune only because there isn't a wait time between pulls like there is on the dyno and it just makes it quicker for him but he did said eitherway is fine.. but I need to know as well so I can call a few dyno shops to get an idea of prices for that as well.
Thanks-Candice

I would prefer the street tune, since I'll like driveability as well as performance.

of course, can't believe I forgot to mention it. . .

Street tune here with an unopened C-series 20B, so miles on mine is a guess at 30-40K

Also, Bill Miles, one of the non forum members that I'll be speaking for, is going to be in either the $350 or $400 category
He's running a non-sequential 13B-RE with a Microtech

Steve does a great job with driveability tuning on the Dyno as well. Not trying to muddie the waters. He prefers to street tune because you get real-world accurate airflow through the rad/IC versus a fan blowing constant flow across the nose of the car. You just assume greater danger and liability on the street (4th gear pulls to 140 mph) that might land you behind bars, or worse, get you in an accident.

Just something to think about!

For everyone wanting to do street tuning. I think it would behoove us to invest in some nice ~1 mile radius 3-way walkie talkies to make sure that the strip of road (the straight road out to bernalillo north of Tommy's shop) is safe and clear for the runs. Provide tons of peace of mind and safety as well.

Lemme know who's in on it.

Thanks.

Hey guys I talked with chris at dyno edge, and some guy at the awd dyno in RR. The awd guy said probably 600-700 bucks for the dyno and chris at dyno edge said 100 dollars a car.. he said probably 500-600 So i figure the dyno edge(off of juan tabo and i-40) is the way to go. He will need a deposit in order to reserve the dyno for us. I need an EXACT list of who is getting a dyno tune that way we can get him a deposit. If there are 5 of us I'm guessing 40 dollars each for a deposit will get him 200 dollars to hold the dyno for us. PLEASE let me know whether you are getting a dyno tune SOON so I can collect deposits from everyone.
