Ongoing Montana thread
i actually have been drivin my car.....not a whole lot but i take it out before i go to work. But it is usually in the garage. I really dont want to leave it out in the alley in downtown GF. That and I get off at 5am so I dont want to start it up and **** off people when I am leaving work
I have a 87 turbo II up in helena and i can't seem to figure out what is going on with it. when i start it up it jumps to ~2500 rpm and then completely dies and won't stay at an idle, i've checked everything i can think of that might be the problem and i can't seem to get it running, anyone know of anyone around here that does good work on them? Whenever i run it my turbo gets extremely hot and i am leaking coolant from around my turbo and i don't know where it's comming from any ideas?
any help would be greatly appreciated

There is no one in Montana that works on em, well no one I would trust. The leaking coolant from the Turbo is probably coming from the Turbo coolant line it might be loose it might have a bad gasket.
I really just don't even know where to begin with the issues you describe. It might not idle because it has massive vac leaks. It might not idle because the rear rotor has shot itself. I would recommend not letting the turbo heat up until you find the coolant leak or you turbo might ****. Have you checked your intercooler couplers to make sure they are not leaking? Have you made sure all the intake manifolds are tight and have good gaskets? Have you made sure the coolant and oil lines for the turbo are tight and have good gaskets? Have you checked for Vacuum leaks? Have you been playing with the throttle cable? Have you been playing with the enrichener screw?
Keep in mind that the car is pretty old now and almost everything needs to be replaced. Especially things like thermostats, vac lines, gaskets, fluids, bushings. Rotary projects are not for the faint of heart. As most of these cars are in pretty rough shape.
I wish you luck Brandon all I can say is don't drive it until fix it. Maybe one of these weekends here we can Train up there and see about helping you out. Just please put some money into the basics to keep it alive and don't drive it until you get the turbo coolant leak fixed.
There is an online FSM Factory Service Manual on this site.
**** I think I am going to start a weekend rotary shop if people keep having issues.

87turbo2MT: Hello man. Your problem on start up sounds like a Air Flow Meter problem. Check to make sure that the connector is fully seated and that it actually snaps in place to the female port. I experienced problems like this when my first AFM went fubar: it would start, rev to around 2-2.5K and then just completely die, even if I tried to keep giving it gas.
If you do IN FACT have a vac leak you will definitely hear it. Once you start your car and IF you hear a very loud hissing, the vac leaks your problem. The car will still run when you give it gas if it is a small leak(vac line/cap/ect) BUT the engine will stall if the vac leak is quite large.
Here is a link to the Series 4 TURBO FUEL AND EMISSIONS section of the factory service manual:
http://www.teamfc3s.org/main/factory...TEMS_TURBO.pdf
Read the troubleshooting section and single out your problem there. PAGES 4B-5 shows your vacuum routing diagram, check all lines that are applicable to your set-up. Page 4B-59 is the Air Flow Meter section.
Here is the link to the COOLING Section of the FSM:
http://www.teamfc3s.org/main/factory...ING_SYSTEM.pdf
Look at the coolant flow diagram and troubleshoot where you leak is present. Most likely Ransom was right and you have a coolant leak on your turbo coolant lines, either on the turbo or from the Lower intake manifold.
Your answer to your problems lies in these sections of the FSM. If you have any questions shoot me a PM

No word yet. Called them today and Kieth PROMISED it would be done tomorrow. Just my luck the testing employee went on vacation for a week right before my ECU arrived. AGHHH....
Yeah it will stay running if i give it gas but thats 3000+rpm just to keep it running while my coolant is leaking out of the coolant line that goes into my turbo. I have found a guy here in helena that used to work at the mazda dealership we had a while back and he said he has done plenty of work on them and knows whats he is looking for when he sees a problem. Taking it to him on monday and having him look over it to see what he can tell me.
I wish i had the time to pull the motor and rebuild it myself but i work 60+ hours a week and don't know much about the motor.

You might not even need a rebuilt motor yet. Give us a week or two here. I think a drive will be in order here very soon. I think we should all go for a canyon run and we can hit up helena and try to help this guy out maybe and then train back to the cabin in wolf creek to sleep and hang out or something. We did not get much going last summer in the cruising or getting together department. We should get something planned for this year soon since most of us will be up and running. If they aren't running there is always passenger seats or they have another car anyway. So guys lets get together and "PLAN" something to do this year. Post your thoughts.
Hmm that is no good. I have been waiting on a muffler for almost 2 weeks now. I think the last few parts are getting ordered on monday so hopefully by next weekend I will have everything I need.

Hi all
Hello everyone,
just thought i'd stop by and say hi. My buddy and I recently got two rx7's ('82 and '83) both of them having issues. So we are stripping one down and getting it setup to do some SCCA cone racing. Been getting good info off the site, and found out we've done some minor things wrong. This is my first real experience with a rotary so I have a little learning to do.
We're using the '82 and the plan is to: strip interior, remove all wiring, remove emission controls, modify carb (emission controls and mechanical secondarys), replace fan with electric, add DLIDFIS (if I can get it to run again). Going to keep stock suspension, brakes and exhaust for now, (may be pulling the rear sway bar but will get it running first). I hope to have it going this week but we'll see.
If anyone needs a part from these models, let me know we may have it for you. Most good parts were removed carefully (many already damged or missing) so if we have it,we would like to trade for other mazda performace parts or just some tires or whatever, drop me a line.
Thanks and Hope to see ya at the cones
