USB adapter for microtech parallel port

I have a microtech with one of the old style parallel port type adapters or what ever they call them. I have tried to get a convertor so I can connect this to a USB port instead before and it didn't seem to work. Anyone got expedience using an adapter with one of the old microtech dongles and if so is there a specific type I need to get it something I need to do to get this to work.

Thanks in advance.

You mean serial port.

See these threads for info as this has been well covered:

There a bunch more threads but basically you need a USB to serial adapter. Available almost everywhere. Try to get one with a Prolific of FTDI chipset.

Oh, and of course you need the Microtech serial dongle as well to actually connect to the ECU via the serial port.

Thanks for the links. Will have a read. Yeah serial port. Thought about that after I had posted! I have the dongle. And had a usb adapter that didn't work before. So noted about the chipset.
Thanks

Hi there, I found some on ebay quite cheap that have the prolific chipset.. Pl-2303 it says. Does it make a difference which it has?
There are the FTDI on there too. Which would you go for?

Thanks

USB adapter for microtech parallel port

Use whatever your computer can recognize. I've had issues with one cable on one laptop and then no issues on another.

You can get one at staples etc for around 25 dollars

The PL-2023 is basically standard. I prefer the FTDI, but the Prolific does work. You will likely have to adjust the buffers once installed.

Beware of stuff on eBay. Both the FTDI and Prolific chipset are often counterfeited. Unfortunately there's no way to tell really.

If you can spend the extra money and your laptop has the slot, a PC Card / ExpressCard serial port is the way to go. They use a real hardware UART and work much better.

Thanks for the advice Aaron,
I got my FTDI adapter today and set it up.. Worked a treat! No more using my mates prehistoric laptop!

Gonna post a new thread about some settings. Hope you can offer some advice please.
