Unable to connect with Laptop

Hi all. I wired the unit all in over the last few weeks. Last night I tried to hook up to it with the laptop for the first time and no luck.

I used the little $100 dongle thingee from Microtech.
I was using a Windows XP sp2 laptop with a USB to serial adaptor.
when I tried to connect all I got was an unable to connect error.
I had the power on (the Microtech had a green light on)

ideas?

TIA
Trent

yes you need to go into the driver for your USB adaptor and change the setting for comm port. In Win XP the usb is setup as comm 4 generally and you need it to be Comm 1 or 2 so that the Microtech Software will connect.

Yup, I did that. I set it up first as com1 and then com2. I have the data settings as 8n1, does anyone have a setup that works?

You have to try differnt usb to serial adapters till you get one that works. I went through the same thing. The one i ended up gettting to work was from best buy, made by iogear, and in sort of a green box if i remember corectly.

Do a search in here i know i have covered this subject a few times.

Go to radioshack. They had one there that was their brand and it worked perfectly for me the first time after I changed the setting.

I purchased the Nexxtech (or Prolific as the installer called it) usb to serial adapter at Radio Shack. It doesn't work. I was able to borrow a Belkin adapter from work and it hooked up instantly after I set it to com port 1. I'll be returning the Radio Shack adapter and looking for a Belkin tommorrow. Might be worth putting a list of known good adapters up as a sticky.

The Belkin F5U109 works just fine.

Nexxtech/Prolific = Crap.

belkin ones work perfectly, i also use a dolphin one,

one thing to note is some of them have a 5-6ft cable on them already dont use the serial cable with them that will give you problems, i dont know why but it does
