MA some basic Qs on a microtech LT10S

Hey gang,

I recently bought a 1987 TII from a towing yard for short money. The car originally had a microtech ECU and "was running when parked" - but the previous owner pulled the ECU from the glove box before leaving it.

I just bought a used lt10s and it is in on the way... so I have the fun task of hooking it up and trying to get this bat biatch started.

Once I get it running I'm going to take it to nearby Synaptic3 to get properly tuned on a dyno.
I've done tuning with a Greddy emanage but microtechs and rx7s are new to me. I've done a lot of reading on the microtech ECUs but still have some questions:

-The LT10S I bought came out of a TII with an automatic. will this affect me since I'm 5spd manual?

-The LT10S I bought is set up to fire factory coils. My car has an X4 ignition box and non-factory coils... it looks like it might be wired up for direct fire? I want to get the spark plugs firing in the simplest, most cost effective way possible. I would like your advice on how you would go about doing this. (Keep the current coils and program the LT10 to fire them? buy factory coils and ditch the X4? run the X4 on stock coils with removed ignitors? LS1 coils? there's so many options).

-Can any LT10S work with the X4 box, or does it have to come pre-programmed from microtech that way? Do you have to change any of the settings in the ECU using the laptop connection to run the x4?

- The LT10S I bought didn't come with a laptop cable. I plan on buying one eventually, but should I try to start the car without it? or should I check what it has for parameters first? The seller said it is set up to run a stock FC3S TII.

Thanks in advance!!!

(The coil wiring looks super hacky and dangerous to me. I'd like to replace the whole mess, coils and all)

Got a lot of views but still no replies...
here's one more question - the LT10S I'm putting in my S4 came from an S5. I know the wire harnesses between the S4 and S5 are a little different (TPS wires, injector harness are different between years) but is the actual ECU unit the same? Since my S4 T2 was (supposedly) wired correctly for a microtech LT10s, can I just plug in an LT10s ECU from an S5 T2 and start it up?

Any responses are greatly appreciated - please help me save this 7 from the salvage yard!

Hmm... so one person says the X4 box won't work, and the other says to use it...

I've found several contradicting responses on whether or not the LT10s has to be pre-programmed from microtech to work with the x4, but I'm inclined to agree with joeylyrech. I think the microtech has to be specifically set up for the x4 box, and the one I purchased is not.
At any rate, I bought some stock coils for 25 bucks yesterday, so I'm going to try wiring them up.

I've spent a couple more hours reading wiring diagrams and looking at the wiring already done in the car, and I kind of have my head wrapped around the situation. I even looked through my haynes manual and found the stock mounting locations for the OE coils. (Looks like the trailing coil mounts near the master cylinder on the inner fender and the lead mounts further towards the front on the same fender)
With the previous direct fire setup, there were 4 wires going from the Lt10s to the x4 box - grey with a black, red, green, and white stripe. Then 4 yellow and orange wires going from the x4 to the coils.
So when I set up my new LT10s to fire the stock coils, I'm going to cut the 4 grey striped wires, ditch the x4 box, and ditch the aftermarket coils/ wiring. Then I'll mount the OE coils (ground) and splice the pink (12v ignition) wire into the 2 tan wires coming from the OEM coils (+). And then I will run one grey wire to the pink wire coming from the leading coil, and 2 grey wires to the pink and white wires coming from the trailing coil(-). ....correct so far?

The problem I'm having is figuring out which grey striped wires go to which coil. In the wiring diagram for the MT8 V2.0 (showing how to wire the stock coils) it shows a grey/blue stripe wire for the L1 and L2 coils labeled ignition output 0. It also has the grey/red and grey/black wired to the T1 and T2 coils. But on the pinouts for the LT10 V1.0 (the version I have) The grey/blue is labeled as the tach output and the grey/red and grey/black are labeledL1 and L2 coils. The grey/green and grey/white are then the trailing coils.
soooo.... it's kind of confusing.

Seems like microtech took down the wiring diagrams for the version I need. I found a lot of dead links to V1.0, and the MT8 Version 2.0 pinouts are different. I can't tell if I'm supposed to use the grey/red and grey/black for the trailing coils like is says in the LT8 2.0 diagram, or the grey/white and grey/green which are actually labeled T1 and T2 on the LT10s diagram.

Also, do I use the grey/blue for the lead coils? or is it just supposed to be a tach output in the LT10s? Super confusing, Microtech is not winning my favor right now.

I'm leaning towards splicing the grey/blue to the Lead coils and the grey/green grey/white to the trailing coils.
If anyone out there has an LT10s wired to stock coils and could tell me what wires go where, I would be incredibly grateful.

It wont work here is why quote from microtech efi

You can wire the ignition back to factory coil .

You said in the post before you wanted to run 4 individual bosch coils which will mean you will need to do this in direct fire mode. If this is the case then you cannot do this unless you send the ECU back to be reconfigured for direct fire.
If you plug in the X4 box to an ECU set up for factory coils it will only have 3 outputs working.
If you have plugged it in & all 4 outputs are working fine then the ECu itself must not be set up for factory coils. It will be already set up for direct fire so you should have no problems.

Just an experiment thought i have any one have run the ignition this way ??

Running the stock configured Lt10 +X4 box, Since only 3 channel output is working as michrotechefi tech quote....Then wire 2 bosch coil for Trailing and use the stock leading coil on the other channel. My thought said it must work LOL note haven test this

Forgot !! For the connection you have to purchase an microtech laptop adapter aswell to hook inline with the laptop cable otherwise you can't connect to the ecu, don't ask me why. Most pc dont have serial poort any more so you will need to get the dongle cable

if the stock coil LTS is wired to the x box.. but you double over the leading signal input so it fires two channels on the xbox ,, will still be wasted spark leading but will operate the 4 individual coils ( but never as fully sequential )

if you have an lt10 thats not set up for an x4 box you can still use the x4 box, just use two trailing coils and one leading coil with no ignitors thats how i had my car set up before i knew that the mircotech had to be set up to run a x4 box i bought it lol

Microtech Lt10s

I have bought a second hand microtech lt10s for my FD. The first owner told me that the ecu has been configured to drive the Ls1 coil direct with out X4 or the stock fd igniter. I am new with microtech and i don't know much about it. If any has same configuration please help me with wiring diagram for clarify.

I found a diagram that shows the wiring of lt10s with Ls1 coils pack. Just I someone confirm that it's correct!
