megasquirt fan temp controll??

hey guys wanted to know if any of you have done a setup where the megasquirt has full controll on the electric fan controlls as to when it turns on @ x temp and shuts down and cooled @ y temp .

i cant seem to find out where to make a liner map for the coolant temp map

I've done several on ms1 and ms2... There's no linear map, just an on temp and off temp for ms1.

With ms2 you just use one of the generic outputs based on CLT.

I do want to add that what ever temp you tell it to turn on and shut off it's like 3 or 4 degrees off. So if you want it to turn on at 180 degrees set it for 175, and if you want it to shut off at 160 degrees set it at 165. I think megasquirt does that so it's not turning on and off the relay a million times a second at it's threshold area. And you can get the (relay kit) from diyautotune.com for a few bucks.

I set this up all the time.

Generally I set the fan to come on at 195 and off at 185. Keeps the fan from running on the highway. If the cycling of the fan is annoying to you then just bring down the on point.

There is no "map" for the fan.

In Codebase and Outputs, set JSO to "Fan control". Then in the More Settings menu, you will find "Shift light / fan / Output 3+4". In that dialog, set your on and off points.

You need to modify the 'Squirt to control the fan.

these are the only two things you will have to mess with to set up the fan.

You can lay it out in the proto area however you choose. Attached is a large image of how I usually set them up.

thanks for the diagram, having the fans on all the time is killer.

Has anyone thought of useing the fan controll for a turbo timer?
What if the fan output controlled a relay that was also giveing the igtion power? then when you turn the key off the car would keep running till the temp droped to the fan off point right?

No reason you couldn't, but I don't think any 'Squirt has any time based control parameters for the outputs.

well, it woulden't be a turbo "timer" per say, but it would do the same thing right? just keep it running till it cools off.

The stock FC turbos are both oil and coolant-cooled, so in general they already stay a bit cooler than just-oil turbos, making turbo timers pretty useless unless you're running one that does just have an oil feed/drain, or you like shutting off your car immediately as you get off the highway or something

Well I do have an oil cooled only turbo, and I also have an oil temp gauge, and the oil temp does lag a bit behind the motor temp, on both warm up and cool down. And I realize that the squirt used coolant temp, and while they are not exactly the same, they are related... for instance if I were boosting it hard, the cooland might climb to 195 and the oil to 210, and if I start ideling the coolant will come back to 180 pretty quick, but at least the oil cools to 190 by then.

I also will probably get a seperate oil cooler and oil cooler fan soon

for me guys,
being that mine is a FC and with a 3 core front mount i personally am going to go with two small fans on the oil cooler since most of the air flow has been taken away because of the FMIC.
i would also consider relocating the stock oil cooler to one of the sides so it would atleast get a better cooling during driving. if i dont go with the MSquirt for fan controll.
OR: i found some manual temp controll units at advanced auto parts for like 20 bucks they do the same thing as these but just simpler and you could run those with a relay and do the same job... for the coolant or oil.
i was thinking of doing to MS controll the fan for the coolant and then the manual temp probe controll the oil fans . i know its overkill... but i would rather fell safe then sorry.... =)
