Question Megasquirt Confusion???

So I've been looking at the megasquirt trying to understand the versions, what is what, what works with what, but am getting confused about it. Here's a list:

1. I'm seeing MS2 V3 and 3.57, I saw this somewhere.
2. I'm also seeing MS3 3.57 and some other MS3X stuff.

Could someone explain how the MS2 and MS3 stuff goes together and what works together. Also what are the advantages of going with one or the other? The DIYautotune website wasn't much help.

I am also new to Megasquirt as far as numbers and boards and versions and such. Confusing ****. But i thought this might help..

Megasquirt 1, 2, and 3 (often abbreviated MS1 MS2 MS3) are the different processors/daughterboards essentially, they can be plugged into any of the boards available.
Each newer megasquirt processor has higher fuel map resolution than the previous,
their other differences are noted in the second link paganizondadude posted, since it would be quite a bit to type.

MS3X is Megasquirt 3 with the expander board, which gives MS3 a lot of additional abilities.

Boards are what the processors are mounted to

v2.2 - older version of the board, least expensive
v3.0 - board redesigned to add robustness, signal noise reduction, and the flyback circuitry has been updated so you can run Hi or Lo impedeance injectors, also had the prototype area added.

v3.57 is essentially the v3 board, BUT with surface mount (instead of thru-hole) components, so it is offered assembled. the version also has another connector which allows additional input/outputs for modifications. It has lots of pads on the inside which make common modifications very easy. They don't have the prototype area because of these additions.

check this out if you're not sure which one you need.

So what I'm seeing for the build it yourself types, not the completely assembled units is this:

MS2 - v3.0 (Soldering Required)
MS3 - v3.0 (Soldering Required)
MS3 Daughter Card - are v3.57 SMT (Soldering not required)
MS3X Expansion Card - v3.57 SMT (Soldering not required)

However you can get completely assembled units for both the MS2 and MS3 in v3.57, but I have no idea how those would be able to use in an RX7.

What I'm wondering is if you can use the MS3 Daughter Card and MS3X Expansion Card with the MS2 v3.0 Board???

You can use the MS3 with the expansion card to run your Rx7 very easily, additionally the 3.57 main board version needs no modifying or additional circuits to run fans/bac valve

the expansion board has an additional VR circuit so you don't need to buy/build one as you would for a Megasquirt 2 build

http://www.diyautotune.com/tech_arti...zda_fc_rx7.htm

scroll down to their MS3X write up and they'll explain all the connections you need to make.

Basically think of it this way:
The boards are separate from the daughter cards.
when you see "MS3X V3.57"
say aloud "Megasquirt Three daughter card, with Expansion card, ,main Board Version 3.57"

I'm using the Megasquirt two daughter card with board version 3.57, it was a very easy installation. not as easy as Megasquirt 3 with the expansion card, but it wasn't out when I bought my megasquirt.

As far as what you said about buildable ones. only the v2.2 board and v3.0 board are buildable for the average customer.

More answers but I have more questions.

1. So what your saying is that the MS3 with the MS3X expansion card is all that is necessary to run the rotary?

2. But what if you have the MS3 v3.0 PCB board instead of the already assembled MS3 v3.57 version? Is there a big difference between the 2? if there is a big difference what would you need to do with the MS3 v3.0

3. I'm assuming that the MS3 with the MS3X expansion card would be better since it would be easier to get running that the MS2 with Zeal Daughter Card?

The main points that I've understood is the main thing to run the ignition is 2 VR circuits. On the MS3 3.57, 1 is on the Main Board and 1 is on the MS3X. All other circuits required to run the rotary are on the mainboard including the staged injection and staged ignition???

So to understand this the MS3 v3.57 with MS3X v3.57 needs no modification to run the RX7 rotary engine?

Thanks for all the information so far. Very useful.

Ok did some more digging... It's actually a bit easier to understand, not easy to find information though:

http://ms3efi.com/product2.html

Is the main board for the MS3 kit the same as the MS2 kit?

Looks like im going MS3X V3.57 then. I hate soldering and I aint gunna mess up an ecu so Pre-built for me it is!

Very useful stuff mmoore. Thanks for point me in the right direction..

Why dont more people use that setup I mentioned above though? Seems like a no brainer to me..

Will the MS3 work well with stock NA throttle and auxiliary ports?

Hi-Rev-

1. Yes. The MS3X has everything on board.

2. The differences in our application between V3.0 and V3.57
1. V3.0 will need to be modded to work our BAC valve, Aaroncake's writeup covers this
while V3.57 will be just fine in controlling it
2. If just using MS3 (without the expander card) You will have to use a daughter card on the V3.57 for the VR circuit With the V3.0 board you can just build it in the prototype area

3. Either installation is fairly easy. The MS3X has less internal modifications, but the soldering is very simple for a MS2 3.57 setup too.

Correct, the ignition and the injection are both on the main board

Correct, MS3X V3.57 doesn't need internal modifications. There a nice little connectors that slide on and off on the 3.57 and MS3x card, they are about as simple as snapping two lego bricks together. These "jumpers" replace soldering wires to have the megasquirt choose between things like VR and Hall sensor. Very simple.

Final point - yes All V3 board's are the same, All V3.57 boards are the same. Both MS2 and MS3 have the same 40pin plug that connects them to the main board. like I said earlier, the difference between the two is that the V3.57 board can drive our BAC valve without modification because some components were upgraded.

Paganizondadude

It seems like the a great idea, but Megasquirt 3 was recently released. Aside from it's relative new-ness Megasquirt is known for being Do-it-yourself, and therefore cheaper than almost any other stand alone system, the MS3X is pricey enough to get you close to some of the other popular manufacturers.

Also, Megasquirt forces you to learn, the more DIY you go, the more intimate you get with your car, if you pay attention to any of the writeups (Particularly Aaroncake's) you will also learn quite a bit of what actually makes a car tick.

I think that covered all the questions

Ok, I think I have the idea now. My question from earlier didn't get answer, but that was due to posting at the same time.

Will the MS3 v3.57 daughter board + MS3X Expansion Card v3.57 + Main Board v3.57 work well with a NA stock throttle body and 6port auxiliary ports? I'm not sure if those are actuated through vacuum or through the ECU.

All prices through DIYautotune..

MS3X V3.57- $640
GM AIT- $22.25
GM CLT- $16.25
Wiring harness- $78

total- $756.50 Yeah I know it will need other stuff to make it finished. Even with $250 more stuff it is still under half the cost of the Haltech..

The only other option for standalone id consider is Haltech..

PS1000 with harness (through mazdatrix)- $2,141

Now I got the ECU info down. Just need help with the relay box and such. Not sure about how that works and what all do i need to relay...

If it is an s5 na, the aux ports are computer actuated by a solenoid that lets air pump pressure into the valve actuators. The MS can actuate them. On the S4, they are Exhaust backpressure actuated.
