Laptop will not connect to MS

I have just purchased a new vert 90. This one has a MS PCB v3 and a custom wire harness. I am a MS virgin. I have been trying to read at work how it works, then practice with it at home.

I plugged in the serial connection and the 3 red LEDs turned off. Then I ran MegaTune and Mega Squirt and they both could not connect to the laptop. The serial port seems to be working correctly, and the serial cable is new from a APC UPS system. I restarted the computer to no avail.

As I mentioned before the LEDs light up when it's plugged into the DB37, and the car is ACC. It will crank, but not even a sputter. I don't' think the fuel is squirting. Any help is very appreciated. Thanks!

are you using the serial port or the serial to usb adaptor? The usb adaptor requires you to change the baud rate in the desktop, or laptop computer. Have you been reading the http://www.megamanual.com ?

Thanks for the reply. I am lucky enough to have a new laptop with an old serial port. I am not using the USB. I have been reading the manual. And I was able to successfully test my serial cable by shorting pins 2 and 3 and opening hyper terminal. However when I plug in the MS I get no echoes in HT. In both MegaTune and MegaSquirt software, both the connection screens say it failed to connect to the ECU.
I have also tried a different serial cable, this one (the one I tested by jumpering 2 and 3) when connected to the MS, does NOT turn off the three LEDs. I will keep reading the manual and try to figure out what i am doin wrong.

Thanks again for the response Quasar!

Throw a null modem adapter on your cable then test it again. The Null adapter swaps pins 2 and 3. Some cables that come with equipment are not real 232-C cables, and the null adapter will 'fix' it.

I have received the Stimulator, the power supply. a proper DB9 cable, and a MS sticker for SPEED! I connected it and finally have a report of SUCCESS when i go into the communications menu. I can move the POTs and get various readings. The only one that does not seem to work is the Engine RPM.

I guess this means there is a problem with the custom wire harness in the car. Otherwise I should have been able to connect to this before. I believe out of all the serial cables I tried one of them is the correct type. I thank you all for your help, and will post further problems as they come up!

Thanks again!

So I got the MS verified with the Stimulator, and programmed for my vert. However when I plug it into the car, I can't get the laptop to connect. It just says communication failed. I get all three red LEDs to light up, and when I crank it I smell gas, but I don't get ignition, or even a sputter. There is a 10AWG wire that seems to get bundled into the wire harness for the MS that is run to the battery, how ever when I plug it into the battery I hear a distinct clicking sound coming from the area near the pulsation dampener. I can't understand why it would click, but I feel the PD, and the clicking is def coming from there. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

That is odd.

If the MS works with the Stim, but not when plugged into the car, it is definitely a harness problem.

I would start by pulling apart the harness connectors and double checking that nothing has come loose in there (For starters), and then start tracing wires.

Did you install a full custom harness, or have you installed a converter from stock to mega? There is a chance that if its a conversion harness, that perhaps there is an elec problem in your current loom.

All the best!

Paul.

I installed nothing. The car came with a fully custom made harness. I assume the problem is there.
