CA New Member & First rotary vehicle !

What's up everyone ! My name is Luis, I'm purchasing my first rotary vehicle this month. lt's a silver 1988 RX-7 l don't know what model it is but l do know its not a turbo ll. The car has been sitting in a garage for 10 yrs so the condition of it is pretty good exterior wise besides a few dings. The interior is where it needs most the work as the previous owner broke off the dashboard where it extends to the shifter and E-brake. lt doesn't come with a stereo or speakers due to maybe a failed attempt at installing a new system ?? But overall the real question is the engine ! All the fluids look good such as oil color and viscosity, coolant is bright green with some brown to it but not to concerning, power steering fluid is good as well and brake fluid too. lt was never turned on in the 10 yrs it was garaged so l don't know if it's safe to start it up once l get it. l am purchasing a rebuild kit to be on the safe side. It already has a 5 lug swap with upgraded calipers so hopefully the calipers don't need to be rebuilt.

Now a little about myself, I'm 25 yrs old l'm currently going to UTI to become a technician so l know my way around an engine bay. l own a 2011 nissan 370z as well tuned on E85. Follow me on instagram @luisdecks.z34. l've always wanted a FC but they've gone up in price since 2015 and the condition of them have been getting worse as people are using them to drift or swap. So finding a good Rx7 is hard now a days.

Welcome to the club. Pretty sure someone tagged me when this came up on a Facebook group, to which I suggested a sketchy Best Buy-caliber stereo install. Anyway, now you see why that person tagged me. As for how healthy it is, a compression test is pretty much the go-to on any engine of unknown condition. Procedure is here:
Banzai Racing Compression Test

On the plus side, I've got no doubt that you can source an unbroken dashboard in our handy Marketplace, as well as all of the other parts needed to get your new FC back in proper shape. Also, some non-turbo FCs came with 5-lug wheels and 4-piston calipers from the factory, like mine did. Simplest way to tell is if you have a rear wiper, factory 4-lug cars didn't get one. There are other ways of identifying a factory 5-lug such as the Auto Adjusting Suspension switches too. Consult foxed.ca for the appropriate 86-88 Wiring Diagram and Service Manual to identify the appropriate connectors by their wire colors.

What's up man ! yea lm glad they tagged you on the post it was helpful information. Really took a load off my shoulders with brainstorming ideas of what was going on with wiring. l created an account to help look for parts so l do hope l can find a dash ! the car doesn't have a rear window wiper so lm guessing it was swapped. The current owner told me the previous owner sold because it was his son but he never came back after college lol his son was working on it as his project car but gave up once he left to college. So that's why l assumed it had all been swapped since that's what most people do as a first mod. But hey l appreciate the link to the compression test and wiring diagrams !!

Glad I could help. Generally speaking, the MSC Code determines what model and equipment group the vehicle has. For example, the Japanese base model GT's MSC Code is F044-110, while the base North American model is FB01-xxx (Can't remember suffix offhand, will look in parts catalog later). Both are 4-lug, single piston brakes, crank windows, you get the idea. The suffix denotes the equipment group options within that model, transmission. a Japanese GT model's suffix is "110", which denotes Option Group 1 (first digit) and a Manual Transmission ("10"). Swap the "10" for a "50" and it gets an automatic transmission. "210/250" is the next tier up, usually on GT-X/GT-R, "310/350" is found on the GT-Limited, "410/450" was for the GT-Limited Special Edition and "510/51A" indicated it was an Infini model.

North American cars follow basically the same formula. The higher the numbers, the better equipped they usually are.
