83 RX7 project for a noob?

Hi guys,

Just posting here looking for a little advice. Anyways, a little about where I am at and was wondering if any of you could help me. For certain reasons I am destined to be around the house for the rest of the summer, I currently have a Safari van(hand me down) and was looking to get a "project car" that I could work on to become more knowelagble about cars. I can handle basic stuff like a tuneup and minor repairs but nothing to in depth(yet).

Anyways, I cam across an 83 RX7(yes I know probably not the greatest car for learning stuff but would be more fun then fixing up some 95 ramdom car) for $400....but it has been garaged for the past 12 years. I understand that stuff like battery, hoses, etc.. will definitely need to be replaced. I just wondering how other things will have held up to the test of time?

So my question is do you think its worth it? Any ideas how much $$$ it could possibly take to get it off the going?

I look forward to all you club members knowledgeable opinions.

Thanks

Wup

The biggest problem you will face will be the engine itself, unfortunately. If it wasn't sealed, then the internal apex seals may be stuck (so it can't be started...) or you could have rust issues internally which will score bearings...if you do get it cranked and running, and this is possible, the next biggest possible problem will be the internal O-ring seal that is right next to where you see "12A" on the top of the engine in the distributor area....that seal doesn't fare well at all just sitting in an unrunning engine...the dreaded dowel pin oil leak is almost a certainty from that area of the top of the engine and can only be truly cured with a complete engine rebuild...so far, none of the tricks I've tried from this Forum have cured my engine's dowel pin oil leak problem completely. My '83 had sat for a decade before I fired it up.

$400? Is the body straight with no rust? You'd better buy it before I figure out which Hamilton you live in, maihn!!

JUMP ON IT.

Hi,

Thanks, just heard back from the seller, it was driven in winters before it was garaged, he said it had rust issues then(apparenlty fixed on the rear quarter panels) but I am assuming this car would not be worth the hassle especially with no viable car to transplant too currently available.

Damn, and I was really looking forward to it.

if the work has been done $400 for a few summers of rotory goodness is a good trade off, new battery, plugs, wires, fuel filter, capful of sea foam in the intake, and gas will have you running. find out the last time it ran ask how much the engine smoked and what color $400 for a non running rx7 is ok too, as long as the rust behind the driver/pass seats underneath the buckets has been takn care of
