Question What are tweeters and do you need them?

I tried a search and didn't find too much. I beleive they have something to do with the treble but I have no idea. So what are the tweeters and do you need them?

nice diagram, now I've seen them like that but then I've also seen them by themselves, I'm guessing there isn't much of a difference

You would be right. there isn't much of a difference other than the fact the tweeter is by itself instead of part of a component speaker. (I think?) lol They handle all the high stuff. Like Mariah Carey's voice you know, the ear spilittingly high stuff like in trance.

I have my JL Audio tweeters mounted on the "A" pillers. Nissan does this on their vehicles with "Bose" systems. If you mount them on the doors of an RX-7 your body blocks the highs they put out (because the speakers are at your feet). High frequencies are very directional. Subwoofer output is extremely non-directional, so you can put a sub anywhere in a car, which is why you find most of them mounted in back - of course the fact that that is the only place with enough room also factors in.

Thats a good idea, I would have never thought to mount them on the pillers.

You have to be very careful doing it, as the pillers are rounded, and the tweeters are usually round, and often can be "aimed" - mine have a wedge base you can rotate. To get them both mounted in the same position and aimed properly took a lot of care. If they are too much different they will look strange. Be aware, tweeters require some kind of "crossover" - a device that ensures only high frequencies are fed to them. Low frequencies can damage some tweeters. My JL Audio speakers were two way "separates", that is, the tweeters are separated from the mid-range/woofer speaker. The crossover was also separate. I put the mid-range/woofer in the door (modified the stock Bose housing to hold them), I put the crossover in the kick panel, and the tweeter in the "A" piller. Seems to work well, but I have to turn down the highs as the direct line tweeter is very efficient. I use a test CD to set the levels.

I didn't use a sub, as the object was to get more room in the hatch area. So I bought stock rear speaker grills, fabed my own mounting brackets, and installed JL Audio 6X9 two way speakers in the rear. The storage pocket backs can be poped off the rear 1/4 panels and the speaker grills fitted. It was entertaining sealing the rear speakers to the 1/4 panels. I used the body as an enclosure. It doesn't "boom", but I have plenty of base with the four speakers driven.

Good call, I almost forgot the pillers were angled toward the driver, but I'm sure if I look around I can find some that are pretty straight forward. Worst case senario I will just have a little more work on my hands finding some that I would slightly modify to look proper. The crossover isn't a problem though since it comes with the tweeters I am currently looking at. Thanks David, your information was really useful.
