what the hell is wrong with my head unit?

I've had this problem for 2 months now, and I've sent the unit to be repaired twice at two different locations and both times they've said theres nothing wrong with it. The unit display shows that the track is playing but theres no sound coming from my speakers. I've checked all the connections to the headunit harnass and even wired an extra ground from the - terminal. At times the unit doesn't even turn on, never mind display or play anything. I'm totally clueless on what to do, I can't get a refund, I need to get this unit to work. What can I do? Thanks...

Where did you buy the head unit from?

Option 1-You could always phone the company that produces that model, and see if they will just exchange yours for a new model.

Option 2- is to take out your multimeter and actually test the connections to ensure you have the proper voltage at key-on and off, have a good ground and check the speaker wires for continuity.

Option 3- you may have a problem that is not related to the head unit in a car that is 20 years old. Have you tried a different model (borrowed from a friend) to see if the same problem occurs, or installed the unit into another car?

I'll guess there is a problem with the wiring somewhere.

Bill

Thanks for the suggestions... but i finally figured it out. The sound is going out when my half exposed speaker connection touches the shiny part of the dynomat, but it doesnt do it when it touches the body or anything else. Kinda ironic that the dynomat is supposed to help your sound and it takes it away. Anyone ever hear of this happening anywhere else?

I got a car in at work the other day with a similar problem, but a speaker in the back blew and grounded out.

Is the dynamat the foil-covered insulation? I'll assume it is.

It's possible your exposed wire is hitting the dynamat, and the dynamat is touching a good ground point, like a screw or something. It's possible the exposed wiring won't ground out on bodywork, because it's painted.

Regardless, you should not have exposed wiring anywhere. Better, get that insulated.
