Unhappy lift arms

Dumb girl question: In installing new lift arms, doesn't one just have to unscrew the bolt with the little round thing on the end, then screw the new one in and snap on the new arm? At least it looks that way to us, but it won't budge and hubby is afraid of stripping the bolt. Anybody out there have advice?

I can't believe that there isn't anyone out there with a 1st gen who hasn't replaced the lift arms. At best the hatch stays up half way in direct sunshine on an 86 degree day. We're thinking of using some tool to "crack" away the old arm and use the existing "bolt" thing to snap the new one onto. Not that I intecd to make the car into my grocery getter, but it's rough getting the golf bags in and out without knocking over the broom stick that we are using as a prop.
