i can only think of 2 reasons why a person would buy an imitation kit is bc

A) they roadrace a lot (or try to drift), and end up cracking the front end very often, then it would begin to be expensive to replace them each time, which would be very expensive

or

B) they can't aford the original, and risk not having it fit correctly. Most people can't buy a $1700-2500 front end, then $1500 sideskirts, then a $3500 paintjob, so they buy the next best thing, the replica. It helps them afford something that they've always wanted, but could *readily* afford. And best part, your average joe on the street wouldnt know the difference from a C-west or a buddyclub. . . so you can tell them anything you want, and it works.

then i can think of 2 reasons why someone would want to buy an original.

A) Theres a feeling of prestige and highness when you know how much you paid for the bodykit, as well as when you go to a local carshow and flaunt what ya got. It is indeed a good feeling, especially when your car is complete.

B) The feeling of buying and keeping a company you believe in, in business. Sure a knockoff may *in a way* be a slap to the face to a diehard guru, and it may want to make Japanese companies not want to import things to the US for fear of copying.

Im not saying theres nothing wrong with replica, and im not saying theres nothing wrong with the original. I am on nuetral grounds on this subject, as taste and personal prefference differs from each person. But personally, if it looks or fits better than the original, then i say good job. It does take effort to make a replica BETTER than an original.

there have been MANY arguements on replica vs original, and both sides of the story have been told, so i wont make this post any longer

I think its just the way some people think, I know Im not alone on this... I was just trying to see it the way you guys do..
For most people it doesn't matter whether it's a replica or not. It's how much money they are spend.

I would rather put more money into the house I'm building then pay 2 times more for a piece of fiberglass. My house (or other things) have a higher priority than my car.

Priorities... People have different priorities... Say, computer parts... Some people would never buy cheap knock-off computer parts (you know those cheap companies), some people will because it's not that high of a priority.

In the end, whether the owner buys a replica or an original, he/she will have a great looking car regardless that will turn heads, provide more function (depending on which front end you purchase), and hopefully make the OWNER happy. And Joe Dirt, when you pass him on the road sitting in slow lane in his slow-*** mid-80's Honda, won't be able to tell the difference. It simply amazes me how someone who doesn't own an RX7, let alone a third gen, can offer up so much criticizm and advice on our beloved cars and the choices their owners make. I pity those who actually listen to this guy.

riiight. make that a mid-90s Mercedes Benz S-Class....for now. and as a matter of fact, i usually can tell the difference between a knockoff and an original. as stated above, "get your **** straight before talking out of your ***."

err....something like that.

it simply amazes me how someone that owns a car like the FD RX-7, considered to be the "cream-of-the-crop" Japanese sports cars, will buy a knockoff body kit.

that is just like seeing someone that lives in Hillsborough or Atherton wearing Target brand clothing. that is just like seeing a Ferrari 355 with Kirkland Signature tires on it. thats just like seeing a 993 Porsche 911 Turbo with HID-immitation light bulbs installed on it. that is just my opinion.

my 2c

What a belly laugh. This thread is killing me.
Fake, imitation, knock-off, look-a-like, re-manufactured, replica, rikki, or what ever else you want to call it, a given part made of the same or better material and constructed in the same or better manner that looks, works and fits the same or better, for a better price, is WHAT?

What ever the person buying believes it is.
I think too many people have their self-esteem tied up in the tag that hangs off their dress.

It's the same in every industry, ask Bill Gates when he borrowed the now Windows format from Apple, who BTW just happened to borrow the initial mouse point and click development from who?. hmmmmmmmmmmm. Get it?
Is your computer a replica of a copier? (maybe a grandson)

Some or maybe even most of these replica shops will fall by the wayside because of a number of reasons as in any business. It could be lack of capital, business knowledge, marketing, inferior products or a host of others but I wouldn't look down on anyone trying to improve on another's idea while making a buck. That's free enterprise as long as you’re not stealing proprietary information.

"A fool and his money will soon be parted"

If a replica is just as good as the original, then why pay the extra bucks?! Oh, so I can brag to my friends... I get it.

Hey don't you know that rich people are typically cheap. How do you think they stay rich? I'll tell you how "KNOWING WHERE TO SPEND THEIR MONEY"

Not yet, should be done in the next few days. Shop was slow getting started. Believe me, I'm rushing them...I go over and visit them everyday, they probably hate me.

Last week they told me they should be done early this week, but had forgotten about Monday being a holiday, so I expect it Wednesday or Thursday.

careful, you don't want to **** off the body shop. I hope it is a good one. The whole replica/original debate hinges on your bumper Like Leslie Nielsen said in Airplane, "I just want to say good luck, we're all counting on you."

lol, my front end just came in too, it's at the bodyshop, but I still don't know when it's going in since I have to install the single turbo and i'm still waiting for some parts, but everything should be done in about 2-3 weeks and then we can settle the replica/orginal debate

I am getting my single put in now too, with the replica feed front end sitting in my computer room...Hopefully I will be ready for the 2-3 wk showdown, though probably not, since I haven't even started looking for a body shop. Oh yeah, and I have an automatic, so we can add that in to the debate LOL replica/original 5 spd/auto

The shop where my car is has another FEED Type II bumper going on another silver FD. Dan (shop owner) said the bumper came to him straight from Japan, so it might be an original. If so, he will definately be a source of comparision.

Who on here has an original FEED? Whomever you are, do you remember if your original bumper had bolt holes already in it for the 99spec lights? The reason I'm asking - the other FEED bumper at the shop where I'm getting mine done (which I think may be an original) did not have the bolt holes for the 99spec lights drilled, mine (replica) did. Both had the main hole for the 99spec lights to fit through, but the other didn't have the bolt holes.

am I making any sense?

Anyone know who is making, or has one of the $250 Feed replicas? I have a link for it, but since it is not germain to this thread I'll leave it out on the other thread.

Kyle, your Feed(r) looked better than my original Apex'i ever did. And not as thick and coarse as my current WW/ Knightsports (r) front bumper.

I will ask the shop who the owner of the other silver FD is that is getting the bumper preped. Then I will find out if his bumper was original or replica. Then I'll ask the shop about the differences in quality, fitment, etc. Lastly I will report.

Shop says that if the bumper dries enough to handle it, I'll have it back tomorrow, otherwise Monday. ARG!

Canman6969,

You are a horrible salesman. I have been watching you for a while, you are defensive and are always ready to flame. I wouldn't even trust you with beer money...

The sad part I don't know your business ethics but let me tell you that you come off REALLY bad in the net. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way.

In defense of Canman6969,
I am in the process of doing business with him at the moment, and I have to honestly say that he is great guy and him customer service is top notch! I have never once felt as though he was taking any kind of advantage of me and he has completley kept me in the loop as to what was going on with my order. He is an honest guy who is trying to get the RX7 community "real" j-spec parts for lower prices than most of the places here in the states. I like FEED stuff a lot and the actual US distributor for FEED, R magic, and Rotary Run etc.. completley sucks and charge a lot more that Canman6969! As far as the real vs. fake thing, I wouldn't buy fake stuff just beacause, it is taking business away from the actual creators of the piece whatever it may be. If these companies were to go out of business because of **** like people bootlegging their designs then, there probally would be a lot less new stuff on the market. We all know that the pulse of Rotary tuning is in Japan and I for one will do whatever I can to encourage companies like FEED and R Magic to stay in business so I can continue to enjoy their products and designs. Oh yeah, I don't understand how a copy made from a mold of an original fits better then the original. Did he fix it and then mold it or something?

Ya, im pretty bad at that I would have to say.... Im not good a writing, what im thinking, especially when Im here at work... too much on my mind... Maybe I should just wait till I get home before I do make comments..

I tried to say before I dont care what people buy, thats up to them. Im there with SHARMACK, I just think its a shame, if they copy the bumpers enough, maybe they might go out of business, here is Japan that is always a possibilty.... So what will he copy if he put them all out of business. Will he make copies or the Copies? and just sell them for ever. Without ever having a new design. I would have to say we are stuck on FEED so lets bring up the FEED TYPE II-R, I think most people like this bumper. But if it gets copied in the states, and FEED isnt able to sell enough, they will stop selling it, and all the people that want one may never get it.. Its just a shame... I hope that shows more where Im coming from, its cool you can get it cheap, I know a lot of us dont have tons of money, but there is a big picture to it all....
