Poll: Subs...

I can't decide!

Alpine Type R or Rockford Fosgate Power Punch?!

And... What amp?! I'm thinking Crunch Drive 500x2 (since I have a low budget)

BTW--are there any good websites that can explain everything about car stereos, from ohms to bridging?

Might wanna be alot more carefull what you say... those are NOT the finest

I would suggest a Focal driver... In fact it was recently stated in a mag (not sure which... but I could find out) that if you want the BEST driver... go w/ focal.

I have heard LOTS of comparisons.. and I would have to say focal does take the cake. IMO

Mmmm.... After reading about alpines and fosgates, I think I'm gonna have to go with the Rockford Fosgate HX2 10"

Plus a friend of mine has that model and it sounds great, and plus I can get killer deals on that woofer.

I've never heard of Focal... I've heard of JL and listened to their subs, but they are too expensive and I am guessing that Focal subs are expensive as well.

Next thing I really need to know is about amps... What kind should I get that would power the HX2 fosgate but still leave some cash in my wallet?

Thanx

Btw... I just talk to a friend... and I was wrong.. the focal's wern't the highest for SUB's but REALLY good for others.... (don't get me wrong their subs are KILLER but expensive your right...) BUT

Image Dynamics IDMAX was the one that was rated the best! I appoligise for talking before checking .... but I can get you the link a little bit later.

On the cost side... you can get about 2 IDMAX's for the cost of 1 JL W7. *shrug* let me know if you want more info...

It's all just opinions tho... I would suggest searching other boards!

Hehe... I can get the the HX2 10" Rockford Fosgate for $114.95 or $133.00. As for the crunch drive 500x2, I can get that for $130.00.

Any cheaper would be great (as long as the product is not refurbished or used)

As for bazooka tubes... I've had one, it broke... Plus they don't give me enuf kick

All this "I talked to a friend, who said xxx brand was the best" or "I read in a mag that xxx brand got the best rating so it is the best" is a joke. If it's YOUR car YOU should determine what sounds good and what doesn't. Go to a quality install shop (actually go to a crappy one too, just so you can appreciate what a good sub sounds like) and demo as many subs as possible. Bring your own type of music becuase different subs set up in different applications sound different and are better for some applications than others. If you find a shop that carries what you like and what's in your price range, ask if you can listen to some comperable installs. I doubt they'll have your exact setup in an FD, but they should have something similar in some type of hatchback. Most good dealers will go that extra step for you.

AZ_Lynx: Focal makes GREAT subs for almost any application, but check out the poll and posts dude. he's talking about entry level speakers and budget amps. Do you think he's going to be able to throw down $350-$750 for a focal? And then be able to afford an amp to power it?

FullSmoke: Do what you want, but just remember, in most cases, you get what you pay for.

BigRed: Very true... I normally save up lots of money and get the better stuff, but this time I just want that "entry level" stuff so that I will still have money for the heavy engine upgrades
I would go demo the subs... but no one in town has alpine type Rs... they only have type S

Alpine's entry into speaker production came relatively late compared to their entry into the world of mobile audio. They made a name for themselves on quality head units and continued into processors then amplifiers and finally speakers. What made alpine so popular was they were one of the first to have a gambit of models which spanned all price ranges, allowing it to compete on most levels with different models, where as most other companies were targeting specific audiences (low end jensen, high end nakamichi and eclipse). With a loyal following of consumers, they were then able to use their brand recognition to put their name on speakers with the same ideas as when they released their head units. Release a wide range of models so that you can cover most of the market. Which they have done fairly successfully. From Low-middle to middle-high price ranges/quality you can find an alpine speaker to fit your application. Again.. they've covered most of the market but not all. You would be hard pressed to find a moderate to serious audiophile with a pair of alpines in the trunk (but I wouldn't be suprised to see them with an alpine head unit) and at the same time you wouldn't see an alpine speaker at radio shack.

I've got some 6.5" alpines in my car... And they sound GOOD... MUCH better than my friend's 6.5" Kappa (?) Infinites... The sound is so much more clearer and plus i saved like 70 bucks

What about amps? I'm prolly onna get the Crunch Drive 500x2 amp (are these any good?) for my one rockford fosgate power punch 10" sub... Of course I don't know much about amps or bridging. Is there anything that can teach me how to bridge, ohms, SPL, etc, etc?

I've heard lots of things about amps. Some conflicting and some just plain weird. I need help! For you guru's, teach me!

I've always had JL Audio subs. I think that they sounded great. Plus, if any of you watch MTV CRIBS. A lot of the hiphop/rappers have JL Audio Subs in thier cars...think about it...they got all the money in the world and can buy just about any sub they want....and yet they buy JL Audio.

NOTE: I know that the basis of my argument is not scientific.

Are you kidding me? Tell me you're not serious. If that's the case, I'm going to go bite a bunch of guys ears off, because if Mike Tyson does it (and he's a really good boxer, he can beat a bunch of people up) it must be okay.

Just because someone can afford expensive toys doesn't mean they know what they're buying.

I'm not saying "JL audio sucks" because I don't belive that. they manufacture good subs (not the best IMO, but good) but that was the lamest assumption I've ever heard. Like what you like because You've heard it (and others) and can come to the conclusion that a you like/dislike a certain speaker.

BigRed (or anyone for that matter), what would you consider to be a very high-quality 10" sub option? i'm having to go from two 10" subs (JL 10w6) to a single 10" due to mods in my fuel system, and want to get something seriously nice to fill that void... what are the super-duper-mega-badass 10" subs out there, expensive or not?

How are you going to install it? is it a pre existing box, or are you starting brand new? Any reason for not going for a larger sub?

if you're a fan of the JL's (even if you're not, it's a good sub) and you don't want to have any trunk left, go for the W7 series in a sealed box. either the 11W7 or 13W7 nice tight bass. for something more boomy, he Diamond MacDaddy 10's and 12's are nice. they work best (for boomy aplications) in a ported box with a looooooong baffle. to fit one in an FD would be TOUGH. but you could have it in a sealed box for a tighter sound and high quality repoduction too. The shop that I want to do my install at deals focals, and I've Demo'd 3 of their 5 lines of subs and have enjoyed them all. I've decided on the PolyKevlar 13" (I can't afford the utopia's... yet) dropped in a sealed box in the spare tire well. That I've found has the best quality sound repoduction with the music I listen to.

hey, check out car stereo reveiws archieves. they had a killer review of a fd with three 10" jl w6's mounted to the rear hatch lid(unused real estate) about a year ago. great idea if you want serius bass out of your fd, and price is not a serious problem since it will require a lot of labor to replicate.

thanks for the reply's friends... i did have a sealed enclosure w/ two 10w6 JL's in it, but since i added a surge tank and inline pump to the fuel system in my FD, there is no longer clearance... i am planning on picking up one of the single 10" enclosures that Damon is going to stamp out soon, because that i can fit, sitting straight under the tower braces... the rest of the trunk is pretty much gone due to fuel lines and external tanks... if only one 10" is going to fit, what would be the best? i do listen to 'boomy' music often, so whatever will hit the hardest in a sealed enclosure would be optimum... thx all..

The latter part of my comment was supposed to be humorous...as you can see by my note. However, I do feel that my statement does have some merit. Why? Because not only do most rappers/hip hop have money and being able to buy pretty much whatever they want, but also I would think that, being muscians, and most likely being pretty picky on how thier music sounds, they would also buy it for the quality of music and manufacturing.

I also agree with you in the case that you should go out and listen to different types of speakers and see what you like (as i'm sure that said rappers did). Not everyone is going to like the same thing, and I whole-heartedly agree with you that one should come to their own conclusions.

I did go out and test several different types of speakers and the JL Audio 12 W6 is what I liked best. It sounded great, fit my install, and worked with my budget.

I like my ears BTW and I would like to keep them.
