interior paint / dye

What prep should i use before interior paint.

1) scotchguard?
2) soap & water?
3) another solvent (maybe ammonia?)

converting the interior to black from blue... does anyone know some good links to some customized interior color examples?

thanks

Wha? Are you trying to create a flaming thread?

You could probably trade someone for their blue interior + cash if your black interior is in decent shape.

If you really insist on covering up the lovely black interior, use dish soap and water and scrub everything a few times to make sure you get any vinyl treatments (like Armor All, Mequirs interior stuff, etc.) off before painting.

He said blue to black...

I agree though, don't bother trying to repaint it. It's pretty easy to find black interiors for sale. What parts are you planning on redoing? Seats and carpet too?

if your just trying to paint the center console and ash tray that always fades brown... or any other PLASTIC part then use KRYLON FUSION for plastic paint... i redit all my black plastic interior peices back to black and it looks awesome... looks like it did when it was new... as far as painting the dash or any other rubbery or soft vynal they use vynal paint, and they make carpet spray paint that is not really spray paint its actually a spray dye... yo ucan get all thi at a local parts store...

but why on earth are you converting from black to blue... everyone wants a black interior all you have to do is ask someone to trade you... i mean you have to take the dash and all the interior out to paint it anyway...(you are going to take the whole interior out to paint it right? please say yes) hell i had a blue interior s5 gxl with perfect... i mean perfect interior in it. i would have been glad to trade but i sold the blue stuff to my buddy who badly needed it. anyway... good luck i guess

That vinyl dye is crap. It doesn't really dye anything and can wear off fairly easily. I would look for interior pieces that are what you already want. I've gone through this and regretted it a lot.

We should have a reading comprehension test in order to join the forum. He said he was changing TO black FROM blue... then on top of that, someone else already made the mistake, was corrected and made a comment about it IN THIS THREAD. Damn.

Good PROFESSIONAL vinyl dye is the way to do it. If properly prepped and applied it will work very well. Typically that's something left to the pros though.

Thanks all that actually read what i am doing!!

Project is going real well - although taking out the dash today was a HUGE bitch.. previous owner micky moused the alarm installation, and the wiring was all looped around dash components.. arrrgh.

The interior pieces are taking the vinyl paint real well.. I used some scoth Brite to get a bit of surface, then some iso propol (alchohol) to clean off any armor all etc..

Will post some pics shortly.

still truckin

I've spent the last week + a bit working hard removing everly little piece of trim. The Dash was the biggest B*tch.. Some of the instuctions on the forum helped, but found that I had to refer to a few difference sources including the haynes manual. Here are some pics; More to come as the new carpet gets put back in. Also, Im getting the leather seats re-done in black leather... NOT CHEAP!!

headliner

PS I sprayed the headliner!

I know Im crazy, but I figured Ill see how it turns out! Not bad, but the paint kinda reacted with the fabric and put some weird wrinkles in it. I can definately live with it though.

Broken plastic

Also - you CAN use JB weld to fix broken plastic pieces. You just have to let it set overnight then give it a little sand, and a whole lotta paint. I was very impressed. End of the day you will not even notice the fix!

so i was painting the interior plastic pieces, i used the krylon fusion stuff ans it worked great, then i took off my door panel and tryed it on the soft vinyl and it really sucks, not only is it tacky but chips super easy. i read this thread after the fact and went and bought the duplicolor vinyl and fabric paint/dye.
my question is whats the best way to remove the fusion crap from the soft vinyl?
should i lightly sand it , try paint thinner or whats the best method?

Xylene or toluene may work well. All these solvents are really toxic stuff, so be careful.

wax and grease remover. It is basically a very light paint thinner, should take it right off. Same as paint prep. Also you should try the VHT vinyl and fabric dye, I did and you can't even scratch it off, keeps the vinyl pliable and soft like it was new. here ya go http://www.caswellplating.com/vht/vht_spec.htm second one down, good stuff. Do not use abrasive solvents on the vinyl, it will ruin it. here is a sample of my test panel. Charcoal satin gray with Carbon Fiber trim.

Keep the dashboard and door panels blue. You'll never get it to look right. I took some RIT fabric dye and mixed it with hot water in a spray bottle and rubbed it onto the carpet with a rag. Turned out good. Took a lot of dye to get it deep and all the way through to the matting. Flat black rattle can works great for hard plastics. I used it on my arm rest area and the rear panels and door sills. Hasn't chipped at all yet. Just small scuffs that rub off. I covered up the door fabric and armrest cover with black vinyl from Walmart. As long as you put a good amount of glue down and trim it right it will look good.
