MI Fog Light Question

I am in the process of a rebuild/conversion and am adding driving lights. I would like to keep things simple and was wondering how the optional fog lights were wired into the system. I have looked in the FSM for details, but am coming up short. My question is; Is there an optional switch for fog lights, and if so, where is it located on the interior? Is the car already wired for the fogs? I plan on running through a relay, so I don't burn up the switch. Any information would be appreciated.

I can't answer all of your questions but I can with the switch. Yes, there is an option for an OEM fog light switch. You can order the switch (call Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda) and it gets inset into the blank next to the factory alarm system and exhaust overheat systems on the center console right below the stick shift. I know this because this is the way my aftermarket fog lights (PIAA) operate. There is space for three switches and the one you want is called the "switch, fog-front". It's part number 66-480 but I don't know the corresponding ordering number. Ray will though.

This will keep you interior looking nice and OEM. As I understand it but could be wrong, if your car didn't come with the fog lights, I don't think the wiring is there. My PIAA lights were wired directly to this switch so I know aftermarket lights can work with the switch.

Good luck.

Thanks for the followup. I'll check it out.

save me from making a new thread - but i can't find OEM fog lights for sale anywhere!! all i get by searching are bulbs and stuff... anyone know where i can find OEM fog lights?
My car seems to have had them already because the previous owner told me and the switch is still there and the wire has the connector just loose under the center console.

any idea where i can get the fogs?

If you mean non 99 spec ones, then try Ray Crowe at Mazda Malloy. He'll have the info for you. If you want 99 spec ones, then:

http://www.rx7store.net/product_p/99specfog.htm

As an aside, PIAA makes several models that are almost identical to the OEM 99 spec ones. I know because I used these instead of buying 99 spec ones. Paid about $200 installed for the PIAAs.

What are those piaas called and is it a pretty easy install to hook up to the car? I love those 99 spec ones but i'm hesitant because they sit right in front of the oil cooler and that can't really help, plus they are rather large so they block like 35-40% of the cooler from the looks.

I'd be more interested on the ones i've seen that mount on the inside of that division in the bumper, or say on the very outsides of the intercooler, which i'm sure can afford the small block of air better than the oil coolers

thanks for that btw for some reason i looked that over... i thought that 415 was for the different style front bumper lights on the 99 spec, i guess those are included with the bumper.

The car is at Kilo Racing so I can't go out and confirm, but I'm pretty sure they are the 510 series (without the grill of course):

PIAA does make HID lamps now so you might want to look at something like this:

http://www.piaa.com/Lamps/Lamp-pages/610hid.html

The size is pretty much the same as the 99 spec ones. As they sit in front of the oil coolers, they do block some airflow to the coolers. However, I have no problems with oil temps at all. I do have dual upgraded coolers though so I am sure this helps a lot.

I put them on because I like the 99 spec look. Here is a shot of the car:

nice dude those look awesome, howd you mount those? just regular mounting spots from the hardware that comes with the lights? and about the plug into the car with the factory switch, any issues there or is it just straight up positive and ground? if i remember correctly the plug from the switch when i looked under my center console (i have switch already there) was just 2 wires connected to a connector, so technically i can just splice those maybe add a fuse?

details on the install would be great.

and about HIDs as fogs... i would never use HIDS as fogs, i'm gonna be using either super yellow bulbs or yellow lamin-x over the front of the lens so HIDs are outta the questions for 2 reasons:
yellow HIDs light up this nasty green color and THEN turn yellow slowly as they heat up
and 2 if its hooked up to click with the alarm and the lights flash, the HIDS dont get power quickly enough so one or the other would flash at random intervals and they would flash that green color when the bulb is cool.

I'm loving that look though they look NICE!! i wouldn't mind mounting them there if you didnt have any issue with the coolers. I have dual r1 coolers on mine but my oil temp gauge broke so i dunno about temps yettt

The install was simple. I fabbed up a couple of L brackets out out metal and bent them to fit. The wiring was also simple, a direct wire into the two wires you mentioned. That's it.

the 510 series... that metal bracket on top just comes off? those are the exact ones you have or do you have the clear 610 HIDs?

NO I don't have the clear HIDs. I'm pretty sure they're the 510 series but the car is in Orlando so I can't confirm this until next week. THe metal bracket unscrews as does the metal grid cover. I can't remember what the bracket looks like but maybe you can turn it sideways and use it to mount the lights?

ahh that's cool as long as i know they unscrew i dont care what series it is. that size looks amazing on the FD. I might mount them on the far corners of the intercooler as opposed to the oil coolers though even though i like that look better they are pretty large they might interfere with the cooling... and my engine was running a little hot already.
