FD stereo system recommendations

One of my rear speakers is blown and I'm thinking of upgrading my entire stereo system. I'm thinking of getting a Nakamichi MB-75 head unit/6 disc in dash changer and I don't know what else I would need. What speakers fit and what kind other components should I look into? I know nothing about audio so any help would be appreciated.

Good choice, good choice . . . if you can afford it step up to the MB100 unit -- it has even better sound quality!! However if you do this unit you will need an amp, which I would recommend with either of these type of head units. What is your budget and what are you listening tastes?

Heh I was checking out the MB100 unit but it's just way more expensive than the MB75. Anyway, obviously want to spend as little as I can but I was thinking of spending around $800 maybe (and I think I can get the MB75 for $450 from someone). As far as listening tastes, I pretty much listen to everything and anything. I'm not really a huge bass person though and I don't really listen to anything super loud though so I don't think I need all that much power. What would you recommend to go with the MB75 head unit?

get a mid-tweet kit,get a mid-tweet kit,get a mid-tweet kit,get a mid-tweet kit, that is the most important thing.

with that, you should definitively get an amp at around 4x50W, it should be enough. a good mid-tweet kit would run you around 200 and it will completly change your sound. Won't if you don't have an amp though.

I agree with Puma. A mid/tweeter kit, seperates, will give you some of the best possible sound today. You will be able to place the tweeter in the best possible location. (Which is kind of specific to that tweeter, but some good guesses can be made.) First of all, do you like a bright tweeter or a softer tweeter? Do you listen for guitar, drums, vocals, or just listen to music? How loud do you listen to it? What is your favorite type of music? (that is me pinning you down on this question!)

I think the MB750 is still a good choice. I was simply throwing out ideas. I also think a decent set of co-ax speakers for rear fill would be nice. You could power them off of the MB750. If you do this and buy a 2 channel amp for your front seperates you would get excellent volume and sound quality.

yep, spyfish is right, an amp for the front would be enough but still, one for the four is even better. As for the rear speakers, i haven't done it yet but PLEASE, do not upgrade with 5X7 like the ones there is in the car, try to fit some 5 1/4 or even 6 1/2. I don't know if it is possible to fit those speaker but if it is, don't hesitate, the quality of a 5 or 6" round is VERY superior to the best 5X7 available.

Hey spyfish, do you have mid-tweet?, where did you place the tweeter? I tought about putting it in the little triangle on the door in front. Will it fit? I know this is the best place to put those but damn, that place is thight...

thanks a lot

puma

Oh and here is a pic of my sound system if you want ideas

I have sooooo many things going on that I have yet to get my Boston 3-ways in yet. I have the template of my design still, but not done. As we speak I am trying to get my turbos back in so I can go on a road trip. (looking for a job!)

Anyway, as of right now I have Boston 5.4s with the tweeter in the kick panel on an angle. I tried them up high for a little bit, but they just didn't sound right. The kick panel is great, but my passengers can figure it out so they just about kick them out! A little higher and I probably wouldn't have that problem. Mine angle mounts are on the outside completely. If you had some semi-flush angles you would be in business. No extra set of wire to run through the door MOLEX connector either!

I agree on the rear speaker thing -- only like some 5.25" co-ax speakers. You can get some plates made really easily. One reason I suggest deck power is the budget and the fact that I usually only power them at 1/2 to 1/6 of the power of the fronts anyway, so why waste the 50 watts if the fader is going to be more forward? (it would be forward for superior imaging which most people really like when they hear a good example of it!)

Heh, it's hard for me to really say I have a favorite type of music since my tastes keep changing, recently I've been listening to a lot of electronic music but then sometimes I also listen to guitar stuff and sometimes r&b. But ok, if I must pick one probably electronic stuff right now. I think I would prefer a softer tweeter, I guess I want a more well rounded system. My friend was recommending I also get a sub and put it somewhere in the back but a big issue for me is keeping all the components out of sight so being able to mount them in the stock speaker positions would be ideal or at least out of sight. I don't want my car broken into for my system...

I highly recommend the Boston and MB Quartz line of speakers. They both have metal tweeters that are bright, but most people I know really enjoy them. You can set the at a lower volume level than the mid for a really nice sound. The switch to do this is on the crossover module that comes with the package.

If you are really not into bass or adding equipment that is easy for theives to spot, then I would consider getting the 6.5" speakers and using Roadkill or Dynamat to dampen the road noise and increase bass response of your front speakers. You can get good low end from either of these speakers. If you decide you want bass later you can add it. (I personally never live without bass, but you don't seem to be to into it, so I am not pushing it hard.

I gotz a question??

Where do you guys siggest buying the Nakamichi from?

Or anything else for that matter....

And I was think it was best for simply door seperates and a sub, wouldn't that be better for imaging? It would seem rear speakers would be right in your ear....
