FD cupholder from me....
New to this Forum, been on the big list for years. Anyhow, here is my mod which I make available to other FDers. Please email me if you need more info. My wife and I have 2 FDs and and FC convertible (go to Mazda's lifestyles webpage and you can see us with our 3 rx7s!). More pictures of the cupholder at http://home.midsouth.rr.com/interstitial/

Isn't it cheaper to buy those Japanese style cup holder that clamps onto the a/c vent? The AC cools your drink during summer time and the heater keeps your drink warm during winter time. It seems to me your passenger will have a hard time not tipping over your drink. Can you still pull the e brake when the holder is there?

Yeah I've seen those around in pictures too. Where the hell can you get those?

Regarding those "clamp on" somewhere cupholders, they are the worst. They bounce all around as soon as you hit any pavement distortion. That is why the one I made is the way it is! No bouncing around. I trashed all those after I made mine. Necessity is the mother of invention.

I like it. Looks like it closes neatly and doesn't have to be moved around alot. And who cares if it would get in the way of the passenger. If you have a passenger get them to hold your drink.

I remember seeing a post about your cupholders on the big list a while ago. I'd be interested in one. It sure beats proping against your hip and the center console (though that does work pretty well).
How does it hold in the turns?

Sometimes we all enjoy a drink (of some kind!) while stuck in traffic on the way to work. I like my coffee in the AM!
Btw, I think your other cupholder of choice (human in pasenger seat?) may make you fold it up.......so you could let her/him hold your drink!

Ooops, I forgot to answer your question. NO MOVEMENT in turns. Solid as a ROCK. Course your liquid might slosh out of the cup during REAL aggressive driving, tho.......
Here is more info on the unit.
--------
Cupholders for the FD that WORK!
Look at it this way-it costs less than Zaino and lasts longer! (and is much less work)!
(I am a list member who makes these in my garage-it is not really a business, so forgive the commercialism!) First come first serve on them.
Note: Fits only third gen. 93-01 rx7s; the brackets fit in the emergency
brake well and the unit is completely removable-no permanent mounting. No
holes to drill, Velcro to paste, etc. However, it is very steady when put in place.
Fits cups from 2-1/4 to 3-1/4", folding cupholder itself is made in
Germany, same as the one in the Mercedes 500SL. Very high quality, you
won't find this at Wal Mart/Poop Boys/Autozoned/NAPA. Folded cupholder without brackets measures 4-3/4"Lx4"Wx1-1/2H. As sold for third gens with brackets attached, it is
4-3/4"Lx4"Wx2-7/8"H. You have to have it folded with a rider in your
passenger seat (your other cupholder of choice), however!
Send check/money order (preferred method) to Marc Wiese, 3484 Milford Cove, Collierville, TN
38017-3606. Price is now $45.00 + $3.50 s/h(Priority mail)= total of $48.50 if paid by check or mo. (To use Paypal (www.paypal.com) to email funds, add $2.00 to cover the service charges, or $50.50 total.) The cupholder itself can be seen in the Griots Garage/Autosport catalogues if you prefer to roll your own. For my installation with my special brackets added to the cupholder, take a look
at some pictures posted The Interstitial Page http://home.midsouth.rr.com/interstitial/intstial.htm and or Steve Cirian's "interior" pictures on his web page- http://www.ScuderiaCiriani.com/rx7.
I was looking into cheaper holders that will work, but so far they all seem
way inferior-quality, size of cups they hold, steadiness, etc (but far
cheaper)
unbefitting the rx7. I won't bother with any other design.
Here is a couple of comments on the same unit already delivered:
>>I have Marc's cupholder, and it is great. Highly recommended.

The clip on types aren't the best since it can't hold drinks that are too heavy. I only drink water in the car so if it spills, it will dry up w/o problems.
I saw a cup holder at kmart that is somewhat similar to the one mentioned on this post. The quality isn't the same and the bracket isn't adjustable. Other then that, the design is the same. It was selling for $5-6 I think.

i have a little monkey, that sits in the passenger seat, he bends over. And spreads his *** cheeks, and i sit my drink in there, it keeps my cup warm, and once the poop hardens it makes a good grip
and blends in w/ the coffee
when i dont have a drink i stick my monkey on my shifter and he knows when to shift gears, i just hold the clutch, and slap my monkey forward and he jumps into the next gear. And to downshift i just hold in the clutch and slap my monkey backward.
I call it a monkeytronic
squeeeeeeak squeeeeeeak

I'm working on getting him to start my car 5 mins before I need it and set all the heat and A/C settings and work on some voice controlled radio, well voice controlled monkey controlled radio ;-)
I don't let him change CDs for me yet because he scratchs them

CUP HOLDER

DITTO TO THE DITTO!
I let my wife borrow my 90 GTUs, which I had since new, interior showroom condition (no drinks in that car either) after 10 years. Guess what? Friggin coffee spilled on passenger seat. Should have known better- her BMW has enough dirt inside to grow vegtables. She once transported a goat (that's right I said goat) in her car to take it to the vet. Didn't want it to get cold in the back of the truck.

cupholders
Gentlemen,
Seems this thread has degenerated into a adolescent diatribe on the bad habits of FD drivers (some of whom let pets in their car? YOW).
My wife has owned 3 generations of rx7s (including her current FD since new in 1994-no coffee stains yet thank you for good upbringing and my nicely designed cupholder) and both she and I use a cupholder in the AM in our FDs. I even use it many afternoons on the way home from work!
It is entirely normal to want a drink in whatever car you drive. My brother has a cupholder in his Ferrarri. YMMV if you drive on the road in an "excessively spirited" manner when you should be driving like that only on the track.
This cupholder removes in 2 secs and can be stashed in the back for just such spirited driving.
Enough said.

Steve Cirian gave it the thumbs, so I would think its pretty good.
**Cirian's "Lighting in a World of Thunder" website taught me most of what I know about FD's...
