remember that the low "spoilers" dont neccessarily create downforce as much as even out the turbulence on the rear of the car. big *** aluminum wings, especially on FCs probably create more turbulence, since they need to be right off of the rear hatch to interfere with the air current.

i think ALL aluminum wings look gay on ALL cars unless they are made solely for the track, ther is NO use for them in everyday driving.

whats funny is that you will see all the ricers with adjustable wings on their hondas, the wings are always turned all the way up so that they get as much downforce as possible on their rear tires.... understeer anyone???

So pretty much it boils down to this;

Functional = Acceptable
Cosmetic = Homosexual

I don't know. I really think it depends on the car. I've seen some aluminum spoilers on cars that don't look half bad. But of course I've seen them on some that look absolutely awful.

i have one on my car, and everyone says it looks ok......true they might not be for some people, but i like it, the brackets look like they should, and the wing isnt 7 ft high......i always liked alum wings, so i decided to get one.......true it might not do much, but if you look through the japanese magazines, quite a few rx's have alum wings,.......its all preferance.....

im not into the "big" wings but some "factory" spoilers accualy do have an affect on a cars handling and speed. take the 1st gen and the factory spoiler-
stock drag coe= .36
with factory spoiler=.34 and a claimed few more miles an hour added to top speed.
also the factory spoiler was shown to produce something near 200 lbs down force @100mph.
all thats from memory, could be off a bit but just makin a point. function....and style!!
look at the stock wing for the early second gens?? simple lip spoiler. havent read any info on it but should smooth out the air nicely, looks sporty too. the only street car i ever saw with a "big" wing that looked good was a frikin dodge ROAD RUNNER!!!!

I love the clean look of nothing at all but then again i love big wings only if it serves a purpose but then again that purpose can be small but i mean the 86-92 cars do not look that great with a wing on it cause there is no *** to put it on but the 93-03 does and it looks great with really any wing but my choice in aluminum wing suppliers is re amemyia they seem to be the best yeah

okay, so why do you all really hate them? because there on Honda's (all the time) ?? or because they serve no purpose and look stupid on RX-7's? Just curious.... I don't like them either, but lets remember RX-7's are Jap cars, so calling them rice w/ wing makes no sense......I like the stock wings on a TII best, but have seen some cool J-spec wings....RE-A, R-Magic, Border, etc.....

I tried my TII wingless and that didn't do it for me.....But I'm with ya on the Honda thing, it gets old as hell......

All wings are cool! OK, so I'm biased.

Just to clear up some things in this thread:
1) A well-designed wing will not create undue turbulence, and may even reduce turbulence in some cases. Believe it or not, wings with rice-style "winglets" on the ends will produce less turbulence than a plain rectangular wing if the winglets are designed correctly.
2) Whenever you create lift, you also create drag. Unless you really need the wing to keep the car on the ground, the car will be faster without the wing.
3) Adjustable wings are not necessarily rice. They allow the user to dial in the correct amount of lift and drag to suit certain driving conditions.
4) The FC is prone to understeer. A wing (or lip spoiler, etc.) on the front of the car will help you handle more so than a wing on the rear of the car.

What's funnier is when they put huge functional wings on the rear of their FWD cars, and as they get up to speed the front end gets light, the tires start spinning, and they begin to lose their steering all at the same time. Some people just don't get it.

Just read about this in Hot4's

They are usually not functional until around 100km/h, that is if it is actualy a properly set up aluminium wing.

However I think they look like ****....
