Hey folks.
Finally getting ready to re-spray my FD. For some reason, she's got a layer of stone gaurd paint which extends about 5 or 6 inches up the side of the car. It looks factory but in my opinion it really spoils the lines. Has anyone else got this stone guard on their FD? Obviously I'd have to take the whole car back to bare metal to get rid of this *****. I was hoping I wouldn't have to do this, especially since it'll make spotting and filling small dents much harder (since I wouldn't have the shine from the paint to help me). Suppose I could guide coat it. What dya recon? I'm about to collect my Feed Type-II front and I'm itching to get my Rex on the road.....it's been far too long!

 

It's factory. Do with it what you will.

 

Yes it is factory and it was put there for a reason. It protects your doors and panels from rocks and debris that get kicked up and will chip your paint.

 

just cover it with your favorite pair of side skirts

 

You don't have to take the whole car back to bare metal, just that part with the rock gaurd.

After you're done painting you can replace that rock gaurd with transparent vinyl. Firetrucks use it in places where the water hoses tend to rub against. It's smooth and invisible except for the fact you can see the edge (not from a few feet away though.) It's also replacable when it gets too nicked up.

 

Awesome, will look into that vinyl idea. Side skirts would also work very nicely! Thanks for the info guys.

 

Oh yeah. I've seen that on HP TV I think. It's just an extremely clear sheet that you can use for your hood and whatnot. Supposed to be very durable, so it can take a pounding and won't tear through. Course, you have to be very careful in putting it on. Don't want to get any air bubbles trapped. You'll also want to clay the area first. Mke sure that it's as clean as it can be as not to trap any contaminates.

 

You can just sand the rock guard down to where's strait. You don't have to go down to bare metal. I did this on my FD on accident. I just kept on sanding to get out some of the imperfections and after about an hour it came out all strait. Wasn't what I wanted but it worked

 

yea i was going to get something similar to this. i heard all of these products tend to yellow overtime though.
