10" Sub placement

I am about to buy an '89 RX-7, and am allready trying to figure out my stereo. I'm thinking about picking up some 10" infinity kappas, and i was wondering if they would fit in the cargo compartments behind the seats?

im sure it has been done 1,000,000 times, but i was wondering if anyone here has done it and how they did it, save me some trouble and come up with some mounting ideas

anything would help, thanks!

The cargo compartments are the worst place for sound. Also, most 10" subs need about .5 to .75 cu ft net internal. After wood thickness and speker displacement, I was hard pressed not to use the whole thing for one sub. Then I hated the way it sounded weak.
if you want them to sound good, put them in the back, or at lest fireing that way. I really like mine with an amp mounted under the cargo tubs and two 6.5" Bazookas in the spare tire location. If I were to do it again I would buy the dual voice coil bazookas to get about 3dB more, but I love it. the whole stereo (deck, speakers, amp and wire) weigh less than 25 lbs.

Did you have any rattling problems? Or was the bass just distorted and muffled?

i was going to take off the doors and flush-mount 2 10" infinity kappas and put my amp against the front of the tub that way i could access controls.

But i like the idea of Bazooka Tubes, i have one in my garage, i just dont have the plug for it and can't find one.

but either way, anyone know where common spots for rattling are? i want to try adn take care of that early.

When I came to this forum I asked the same question. You are going to hear positves and negatives from everyone on this. Alot of them have no clue because they never did it. I have! I made 2 fiberglass and MDF enclosures for Alpine 12"s in the storage bins. I hit 136db with it. Now remember that my 12's where ment to be in smallish enclosures (.64cuft) So look at your sub and see what the manufacturer recommends on this. I then went on to add a 15" Alpine type R in my tire well (1.8cuft, 141db). So I took out the 12's in the storage area. Goto my car domain page, it has a complete build up with explanation on everything.

If you want tight and not loud bass, go with the storage area because of size. It will also allow you to have more cargo area. If you want louder bass, I would go with a larger enclosure which will be placed in you cargo area. 2nd gen spare tire areas are easy to make an enclosure for one 10 and get almost a 1cuft out of it!

My 2 cents!

I should specify that I used unpowered Bazookas for good reason. I control the power input to them. the powered units sound okay, but need more power. plus if you use two of them (recomended) you have to power two amps (unless you use a slave). I suggest two DVC 6.5" bazookas, wired in parallel to two channels of an amp rated at least 75 watts RMS, higher is better. more power doesn't just mean it will play louder, it also means the amp has more control over the speaker. It's distortion, not power that will kill a speaker. more power means it can play louder without distortion.

I did it, i think it sounds great, loud enough that it shakes my hatch, i have the infinity kappa 10" sub powered by a no name brand amp and it's good. As long as you take the storage bin out and make a mold to fit in its place it will work and sound good. Also don't just stick the lid back on top with the plastic, it will dampen the sound, i'm still looking into making a cover or finding some of the carpet from a junkyard to make a cover so it appears more stock. Then just stick the amp under the passenger seat. I'll post some picture of how it looks when i'm at home. There was a good thread done on this a while ago, search on it and your bound to find it. When you make the mold for the bin, use tinfoil, it is a lot easier to use and molds better than the chicken wire i used.

I don't know if it was chicken wire, thats just what came to mind, it was a wire mesh type of thing, and it was hard to get it to bend the right way, either way, i'd use tin foil, it works a lot better.

compartments suck. i work at circuit city roadshop and i just put a l5 ten inch and 5 channel kicker amp in my trunk, custom box, to take up as little room as possible and still get the quality sound.

Personally, I just put a single 10" sub in a box and tucked it behind the drivers side strut tower, facing the passenger side. It's not the optimal placement for the sub, but it's a pretty good location and out of the way if you need to use the rest of the hatch for storage.

Also, I have a 10" Infinity Kappa sub in my GSLSE, and unless you are planning to rock the neighborhood I believe one of those is all you need for an area as small as the inside of an RX-7.

If you're going to do use the compartment. I would recommend you fiberglass it to get as much as air room as possible. I've done it already. I've done both of my compartments and they sound great. I would recommend 10's not 12's unless u find a sub that doesnt need that much space. I can show u some pictures if you like.

If I didnt like to keep interiors stock, i'd do that, GTR. But I like to keep them as stock as possible.

as for you, a 1st gen doesnt really have a trunk. So even if the subs are in the compartments, its still in the hatch, its just a place to put them and keep them from taking up space.
