Nice find. Anyone know what parts should be replaced when doing this conversion? Pinion bearing is NLA from Mazda but if we could get one measured I'm sure McMaster-Carr has an alternative.

 

The OEM pinion shaft sits on three bearings. Two regular ball-bearings and one needle-bearing.

I'm sure the ball-bearings could be easily sourced. However...the needle bearing is not easy to find. Koyo makes them but last I time I checked you had to order 1000's of them. Maybe I just don't know how to search though.

When you take apart the rack you easily access the ball-bearings, however the needle bearing sits a bit deeper inside and if not damaged, I would't not touch it.

so am I correct that it's going from the stock 2.9 turns to 2.4 turns making it a 17% reduction in wheel movement? that would mean if I was in a turn previously where I turned the wheel 100 degrees from center that with the new rack I would only turn it 83 degrees from center? Are we to assume about an 18% increase in torque required to turn the wheel as well?

 

not exactly, the focal point on your calculation should be on the steering wheel. Basically you are accelerating your driver input, by your calculation of 17%. Where it almost took 2.9 turns to completely turn your wheels radius you are now doing it in 2.4 turns.

Again for anyone who has driven with manual steering the torque / driver effort feels is not noticeable because the wheels are in motion. To figure out torque increase when stationary it would be a different calculation involved because you have to include measuring different variables. such as your tires resistance versus the decrease in your steering ratio, that would be my assumption, then again i'm not a mechanical engineer

Good info. I'm trying to get my hands on a spare rack to spec out all the bearings. This would be great info for everyone to know if they want to change the bearings when doing this mod.

Unfortunately no.

 

Since I'm coming into this late I want to recap to make sure I understand everything correctly. This group buy is for a Quaife rack and pinion gear set for an FD steering rack. This gear set will effectively reduce the ratio from 2.9 to 2.4 turns lock to lock, and will require the course thread 94-95 tie rods. The buy in is £196.40 with a 50% down payment of £98.20 due by 9/30/15 (sent to zeropiston @ shaw. ca). This does not include shipping expenses from Quaife to North America, duties and taxes, or individual shipping costs to our address. Does that sum everything up?

I really need a ballpark on the shipping & importation costs before I can bite the bullet. I'm sure Quaife has tons of experience shipping internationally. Can we push Ben for at least a rough estimate for the primary shipping, duties, and taxes?

Considering that the international shipment and taxes/duties (if applicable) will be divided among the 20 of us I'm pretty optimistic that it will be reasonable.

haha I was thinking about this for a while. But the USD seems pretty stable now...slowly gaining value to the GBP. Hopefully this trend continues by the time we have to pay the remaining 50%...
