Its time I updated the group, in the past month the Engineers have had difficulty in increasing the ratio, mazda's design is proving to be the biggest constraint. I've have tried hard and gone back and fort many times to try again and possible trying other solutions (adapting/hybrid another quick ratio rack into the FD) as to not let this die. I've also brought up the recreating a brand new rack not just the rack and pinion rods and gearing, but at the tune of 700-800 pound I doubt I will not meet the minimun order of 25 buyers. I would have really enjoyed the rack for my project car, so not pleased with the outcome. I had no other choice but cancel the order and have requested a deposit refund. So sort of a present over the holiday and a relief for our post buying credit card statement .

who knows there maybe a rack that turns up, or a hybrid rack, or a steering gear ratio accelerator that I may try out--but I guess the part of the fun about modifications and the car hobby. please let me know if anyone ever comes up with any alternatives!

I will refund all paypal deposits as soon as I get it back wired to my account in January. (withing 30 days since I requested, so it will be before the end of January)

below was the long of the short of the discussion.

"Hi Joe,

So it’s more bad news on the standard housing front I’m afraid.
Even if we increase the pinion size by only a single tooth it still won’t fit inside the standard housing.
Mazda have designed the housing in such a way that the O.D. of the housing where the pinion sits is tapered down at the exact point that we need to increase the pinion diameter!
It would require a complete new housing if we were to proceed.
Now whilst I’ve said that it’s not something that we are overly keen on doing due to the costs involved, anything is possible, so it depends how serious your group buy is about a new product.
It’s impossible for me to quote a price for it all as neither I nor my technical director will know the costs involved until we start looking seriously at it. But as a rough guide, a complete new rack is likely to cost around £700.00 - £800.00 for the first batch to account for tooling and castings etc. Any further batches will be significantly less as we would already have the patterns and tooling we need.
It would need a batch order of 25 off each LHD and RHD though, as 2 patterns will be required for the different housings, otherwise it’s just not worth the cost of the tooling and patterns.

It’s all really up to what your group buy want to do and what you’re all prepared to spend, bearing in mind that there were only a handful of orders for RHD racks.

Please note that any prices quoted are 2015 prices. Any orders that are paid for on or after 1/1/2016 will be charged at the increased 2016 prices.

"

Thanks again happy new year to all,
Joe

Are we 100% sure that we DON'T have 25 people for a full rack?

Honestly, by the time you made these gears, and then paid a professional shop (like Maval or Chips Motorsports) to take a stock rack and de-power it, and install the gears, and shipping both ways, you'd be pretty near that price anyway.

Not entirely sure, I can put a feeler out there and would be willing to continue but I would need at least 25 and 100% commitment for a estimated 700-800 british pound (1200USD) stand alone steering rack. I will give people 1 week to think about it, last day January 7 2016. If there are more than 25 people I will tell Quaife to continue on to design a stand alone rack, if not I will refund back the initial deposits when I get them.

I'd buy a complete rack. That's actually what I'd prefer.

Anyone seeing reviews of the actual Quaife racks and not just the guts? I'd be in for a complete rack as long as I can see its high quality.

I'm sure the quality of the Quaife rack would be top notch. Unfortunately for me is is not an option I can go with at the moment. So for now I cannot put myself on the list.

0piston and I both put some time and effort into organizing this GB, (and even if I cannot get the full rack) I would love to see it happen.

Hopefully we can get 25 people to get the full rack, I'm sure Quaife would deliver an amazing product.

Thank you all for participating and a special thanks to 0piston who started this idea.

I'm in for the full rack. It's what I preferred from the beginning. Believe me this opportunity will probably never happen again from such a reputable company. If we do get the 25 needed this will be a very rare and sought after part. It will probably never be made after this group buy if it happens. There is no way you will lose a dime selling this used on the open market even after years of use.

Anymore specifics on the whole rack?

Will it use proprietary inner/outer tie rods? (replacements easily available?)
Mount with OEM brackets?

I always think long term on FD parts as one day I may have to rebuild the rack etc...

I am interested in the full rack. But I need to know will it be the same thickness as the stock one? Will it be an exact replacement in terms of physical size?

Thank you

I was not a part of this group buy but it sounds like they want 25 LHD and 25 RHD commitments in order to move forward, not only 25 LHD for them to start working on it.

Maybe I'm the only one reading it different from everyone else.

I am interpreting it as they need 25 orders for each set of tooling/patterns to prototype. Therefore, if I am correct, LHD and RHD will essentially be handled separately leaving the number at 25 for either. I think I'm out for a whole rack. Sorry guys.

the minimum 25 to develop the LHD rack, and if a RHD rack needed to be developed they would need 25 just for RHD development.

I'm just making assumptions, because essentially we are all in charge of the design. but from what I gather:

-it should be a steering rack we can swap in and out, plug and play
-using OEM brackets and inner and outer tierods. (could use another brand if we liked it to, I think the atomic rex used ford escort tie rods if I wasn't mistaken)
-expectation of similar design and function to that of the atomic rex replacement rack.

I'd be in for a full rack if we can get these details worked out and quality, readily available replacement parts are available.

Leaning towards in...but...

wait....we NEED 25 for both?

I mean, if we have 25 LHD (which we may be able to make) but not enough RHD participants, qualfie won't budge?

No. 25 for each. So if you get 25 people to sign-up for the LHD then you're good. If the RHD folks want a rack they will need to get 25 people in on it.
