Smile Product Development Interest for a proper quick ratio manual steering from Quaife

Hi All,

This a continuation from a thread started from the 3rd gen section here: https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...-rack-1079507/

For the longest time I have been trying to acquire a Atomic REX steering rack, but as you know they are like unicorns and when they do come up they sell quick and over for what they were in the original group buy iirc $1500. I've managed to get Quaife Engineering to develop a proper quick ratio manual rack for us 2.5 lock to lock ( £140.00 - £200.00 + Tax dollar range) , but they need a minimum of 20 Orders we need 10 more. please add your name to the list if you are interested in purchasing one. This is just a personal quest like us all making their perfect FD, I will not make any money off this, and will not plan to make another group buy so once this is done It is done. Thanks for your interest.

Cheers, Joe

I have a extra LHD steering rack in Croatia that I could send to Quaife Engineering in the UK. Since we are in the EU it would be easier to send it from within the EU then from the US to EU. On another note, I might be moving to the UK in Early June, so I could literally take the rack with me and send it from within the UK.

Let me know

What's the advantage of this rack VS maval?

Thanks Spalato that works! I'll get in touch if the this is a go

Fritz, from what I remember Maval just converts the rack to manual but does not do anything to the gearing to quicken the ratio.

Correct me if I'm wrong

The Maval rack is a power steering each that simply had the power steering fittings cut off, welded up and painted. Which is virtually the same as looping the lines.

This rack will have a changed gear ratio which would allow easier turning as if the car was originally designed for manual steering.

I don't know how steering rack gears work but common sense tells me if the rack ratio is tighter/quicker the steering will be tighter/harder.

I've had the rex rack and wasn't that impressed. Didn't really notice much difference between it and the maval.

I'll jump on the same boat as Fritz "I don't know how steering rack gears work but ..."

Is it possible to change the steering ratio (reduce it to 2.5 lock to lock) and maintain power steering?

In theory that makes sense, but this only applies when the wheels are stationary. When the wheels are in motion, as you know since you have used both racks the effort is reduced and almost non existent. A quicker steering ratio will give you quicker driver input, and was surprised it wasn't noticeable compared to some of the reviews I've read on here. But regardless there isn't an option out there for a modified rack like this, so I'm hoping there is enough interest.

you would have to redesign a rack with modified gearing to accept the oem hydraulic fittings, or could to modify the manual rack to add electric power assisted steering from a MR2 as a couple of members have swapped to this from the oem power steering unit. but I think I like your idea, power assist during times like parking, and then turn off power assist when you want that unadulterated connection to the road that would be great!

So by around the 22nd of May I will be in Croatia and able to send my LHD FD steering rack to Quaife Engineering for prototyping. I would use DPD courier service and the shipping cost would be around $30 to the UK and around $35 from the UK back to me, so total around $65, it would be nice if people who are interested in the group buy help me out with the shipping costs, if there is 20 of us...that would only be around $3.35 per person.

No a few guys mentioned they would be interested in a RHD version, I know that the UK has a ton of RHD FD's...so it Quaife Engineering might have one laying around. It would also be good to ask folks from the UK Fd forums if they want to join in on this.

Don't ask why, but I also posses a RHD steering rack, it's also in Croatia...I could also send that one in for prototyping in case Quaife Engineering is ok with making a RHD version, however shipping costs would increase if I shipped both a RHD and a LHD.

Another option is that I'm waiting to hear back from a potential employer in the UK, If I get the offer I will be moving temporarily to the UK, in which case I could just take the rack with me in my luggage and we wouldn't have to pay for international shipping costs. But I still haven't heard back from them...

Thumbs up

Great this is moving--just one more! Finally looks like its going to happen!

Spalato: I will introduce you to Ben at Quaife, and tell him you are sending in a LHD rack. Just pm me your email address. 3 bucks each should not be a problem, it may help confirm the numbers in a list.

tys93r1FD: I'll ask to see if they can just reverse the the CAD layout when they cnc the rack to make it RHD. If that works, well have over 20 and will be able to go into production very soon.

Cheers,
Joe
