I would really like to know if it is the entire assembly or if it is the mechanical part that goes inside the Casing of our existing steering rack. I would prefer a new assembly. Also I have a FD 1993 and the thread of the tie rod end is the fine one. I would also like to know if they will tap them to our needs or do we have to redo the threads.

Thank you!

Sent a message to Quaife about a status update, and hopefully we can get most of the answers soon. From what I remember, if the rack will not be easily adaptable to accept the rods a complete plug in play rack will be developed--which would increase costs.

I could also ask if the majority of people here wanted a complete plug and play unit, we could ask them to focus development on just that instead?

Thanks 0piston!

One thing to aslo keep in mind is the older and newer tie rod thread pitch. I think it would be simpler if we all got the racks made with the newer thread pitch, which are more commonly available. However this would mean that people who have the old style tie rods would have to buy new ones...not a bad thing to replace them if you had them for a while...

Any thoughts about this guys?

The rack does not Need to come with tie rods. It needs to be cut for the more commonly available pitch. I have a 93 and assume it's the finer thread type that are installed. Having to buy new tie rods is a non-issue, really. Again, for common sense long term availability and cost, it needs to accept the newer thread pitch. IMO, if you can't buy new tie rods then you can't buy the rack either.

A complete drop in rack I think would be the less headache option and it would be best to have the more available thread pitch for the tie rods

I agree with you guys. And if its a complete drop in rack, you could sell your existing OEM rack assembly and offset the costs of the Quaife one...just my 2c

small update from Ben

"The racks have been stripped down now, and are being cleaned up ready for us to work out a strategy and design for manufacturing a quick rack kit or complete rack unit.
As soon as a design has been created we can work out prices for the options available to us and you.
Normally when we manufacture manual quick rack kits it is just the rack bar and pinion that we supply. However, as these samples are power assisted racks, we may end up needing to manufacture a new housing as well. Obviously the latter will be considerably more expensive as it involves having moulds and castings made.
Handling the different thread on the tie rod ends would be easier for us to manufacture one thread type, with those with the different type swapping to the other. Whichever type is the more common/readily available to purchase will obviously be best for all concerned.
"

I've said that we would probably go with the later spec rods since to my knowledge they are more readily available. And that we would prefer a bolt in rack, but again cost would be the limiting factor there.

Cheers,
Joe

Tie rods

When you say you prefer the later tie rod ends because they are readily available (I suppose the later are the one with the bigger threads) I don't understand why you say that about them when I just picked up the phone and called Mazda and ordered two tie rods that go into the steering rack for my FD 1993 and they just shipped them out to me. They were available and they are of a finer thread. Are you having hard time to get them from Mazda?

Thank you

Aren't there a lot more 1993 models on the road than 1994 and 1995 combined? I thought I read that somewhere.

In the US maybe. But think worldwide. If they used the coarser threads until 2002...Your product is now more commercially viable worldwide vs just US. And a lot of online retailers advertise the Tie Rod Ends as 93-95 so usually they are the coarser design.

Just to throw in my worthless 2 cents:

I would also prefer a whole new unit. I would want this to be both a performance and an appearance upgrade. I have the looped lines and everything in there right now, and I would like to do away with all of that in favor of something more streamlined and functional. I feel like the continued appearance of a de-powered rack isn't enough for me to spend the money. I understand it would be more cost, so like others, I am curious to know projected pricing.

No updates yet, I would prefer i think a drop in replacement as well, as I think that is my impression of what everyone wants.
