Not sure if anyone was willing to send them out a RHD, but another 20 people would be needed for Quaife to consider production.

Sry guys, I was on a road trip and I just got back home. By Monday I will send my rack out to Quaife.

Regarding the RHD rack I'll follow up on that and let you know.

ok guys small update, sorry for the delay.

I spent the afternoon taking out my rack, I ran into some issues, but all is good now, the rack is out, cleaned up and ready to be shipped to Quaife tomorrow.

One thing to keep in mind, the inner tie rods have different threads depending on the year. My FD is a '93 so apparently it has a finer thread pitch than some '94 and '95 models. Here is Juan's thread about this https://www.rx7club.com/suspension-w...-rods-1077864/

So in case you currently have tie rods that have the coarse thread pitch, and Quaife uses my '93 rack for prototyping, you wont be able to reuse your tie rods. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Here is a photo of my current inner tie rod thread pitch

One more thing...I also had a manual converted rack which I initially wanted to send to Quaife but they insisted I send them the unmodified stock rack, therefore I had to take it out of my car...I also purchased a RHD rack for dirt cheap from some guy in Germany, because I figured I could reuse the bearings and put them in my converted LHD rack, as the bearings in that one were ****. I remember the guy telling me that it was converted to manual...so I figured I could not send it to Quaife for the RHD prototype...well I took it apart today and it appears to be unmodified, the piston is still on the rack and the steering shaft has not been welded....so I guess I have a stock RHD and LHD rack to send to Quaife!

Now...I did find a guy in the UK who was willing (and still is) to ship his RHD rack to Quaife...so now I have to either go on with that, or just send my LHD and RHD rack together straight to them, at a slightly higher shipping cost.

10kg (~22lbs) costs about $35 to ship to the UK from where I live. So I might just send both racks for prototyping...to keep it simple.

I will find out tomorrow exactly what the shipping cost is.

So I weighed the racks and they are about 4.5 kg each, around 9kg combined. The shipping cost difference is insignificant, so I'll just send both of them. I'll let you know when I ship them, and then we just have to wait and see what Quaife tell us...

Is there any way to get Quaife a 94+ Inner Tie Rod and have them tap them to spec?

I have to contact Ben from Quaife about that. I'll send him an e-mail.

So I just remembered that I bought a set of OEM inner tie rods from Rockauto about a year ago...before I knew there was a difference between the '93 and later models....

And yes they are the newer ones with the coarse thread pitch. If the guys at Quaife are willing to tap the racks in two different threads...then I can send both of them...and thanks for bring it it up Hazel324, because I completely forgot about the brand new inner tie rods sitting in my basement. Imagine if I went through all this trouble just to realize my new Quaife rack has the old thread pitch and I cannot use my new rods...eh

So I talked to Ben about the different inner tie rod threads, and he said it is possible to tap the racks in either thread pitch.

However one thing to think about is considering the most common inner tie rods have the newer coarser thread pitch maybe it would be better for everyone to just get their rack with that thread, its much easier to find those tie rods as opposed to the finer thread. Its something to think about.

DPD has just picked up the package with both RHD and LHD racks and both fine and coarse inner tie rods, Quaife should receive it sometime early next week.

The total cost for one way shipping was 272.5 HRK which according to today's exchange rate is around $39. So if you want to help me out with the shipping costs feel free to send me a PM and I can give you my paypal address. Considering there is 25 of us, 39/25 ends up about $1.50 per person. So if you do want to help out with shipping please do not send me more than $1.50, as I wouldn't want to make a profit in case everyone starts sending me random amounts. However this is purely voluntary, you are not obliged in any way to send me anything.

Send me a PM if you want the tracking number.

Spalato, thanks for all the legwork you've done so far.

You should just post your PayPal address here and I'm sure people on the list will see it and contribute.

To confirm, this whole project is to have Quaife make an entirely new steering rack - not just a rack and pinion kit?

Well...Ben said that if they can reuse the stock rack housing, then they will just make the rack and pinion. However there is a chance that they will not be able to reuse the stock housing, and will have to make a new custom one. I guess we will find out soon.

I'm hoping that they are able to make us just the rack and pinion gearset. I'm just guessing here, but it seems the cost difference would be pretty substantial if we have to buy a whole assembly versus a "kit"

I doubt that will happen, because it essentially sounds like you are suggesting they remake the "guts" of the OEM rack. One of the reasons I want this rack is also for a cleaner look in the engine bay. I hate looking down and seeing those stupid lines looped around. Truthfully, I want one both for function and looks. However, if they could accomodate your suggestion as well, then I question if the fluid transfer could keep up with the decrease in ratio. I'm not saying that it isn't possible, but I am skeptical.

Unable to edit above post.
I wasn't really suggesting that they make it a certain way. I had kind of assumed from the beginning that if the cost was going to be so low, then it would just be a gear set.

When I first searched for Quaife steering rack, I saw many gear kits so that is the route I thought they would take. There would be no need to worry about fluid transfer as this eliminates the Teflon seals etc,

I see your point. This certainly would be a budget way out. I am sure that many on here would opt for that.

Quaife will receive the racks tomorrow or Tuesday and then they will start examining them and hopefully soon they will give us a price estimate.
