Just saw this Benny, looks really good!
Some info from someone who actually bought a whole new map pocket NEW for my car....
The original design of the map lid is crap. As stated, it's thin, it's the standard crappy Mazda plastic, and I imagine that putting your weight on it will crack the lid and that's how many have died. The '94+ textured lids (and all the '94 plastics) are of better material and are less prone to breaking/cracking/coming apart.
The spring tension on the lid on my new map pocket was quite high, you really felt like you were straining the lid opening and closing it, and this is uninstalled holding the pocket in your hand. I bent the spring down a bit to ease the tension on it and that helped a great deal.
With it installed in the door panel and the door panel off the car, it opened and closed fine. After installing the door panel on the car, it became tight and hard to open. Just having the door panel installed loads the back of the pocket.
Frankly, I've given up using it as a pocket, I just leave it closed and enjoy not having something broken in the car .
Benny, are you bringing some to Deal's Gap for sale this year? I have a feeling they'll go quick .
Good job on this!
Dale

Thanks RX7 Guru
Great info! I will just add to your comments
I completely agree, by just holding the 93 lid you already get the feel of it being brittle. For ours, I beefed it up the thickness over 50% and filleted the edges, thus adding more material and acting like a "rib cage" There are a few who have held our lid and were impressed. Our lid weighs 3.4oz and has beefy feel.
Filleted "rib cage"
Never owning a working map lid I was un-aware of this until i got my hands on one, I was blown away with how much tension it had! While modifying/replacing the spring with a softer one makes sense, its just a PITA to take the door panel off just to install a lid. So, we took a different approach and designed our lid to be installed without removing the door panel. We accomplished this by re-shaping the cam the lid rotates on. In addition, we are using a metal screw pin which is installed by simply opening the lid!
Also, here is the "stock" cam with its "cut out" design
Our design, fills in these voids and widen it slightly- more mass, rigidity, and strength
This is very interesting info! IIRC the back of the lid actually hits the door panel when it swivels open
Yes, I will be going to DGRR with a few lids only to try and convince you to use our lid so you can store stuff in that precious door vault
Maybe this video will help persuade you Mr Clark

Did I miss the pictures of this installed? I just want to see how it fits on the map pocket itself.
Any gaps and/or does it sit higher than the sides of the map pocket since it's thicker?
