So I searched and searched in the forums with this as the topic, 88 fc gxl model. So I have rhe water pump off housing is free almost gets to end of threaded studs and wham drive pulley! So took the four bolts out, now I own a haynes manual and nowhere in there does it specifical adress how to removal, now I figured a universal pulley puller, but then I thought its threaded in the back 2 groves of the whole pulley so to keep it short, before I do anything and struggle for hours of pointlessness I wanted to get a little bit of advice from the pros to help my job go a bit smoother. Thank you!
pics below.
That pulley *should* slide right off. It looks pretty rusty in there though, some penetrating oil might not hurt to loosen things up.
Thank you, yeah quite a bit of dirt in there too. I even tapped it lightly with a hammer didn't want to go over board. I'll give it a shot after work. Thank you again.
how exactly would I do that without chewing up the studs
grip the stud right behind the housing with a pair of pliers. they're usually not threaded in too tight. but like others have said, with the 4 bolts removed, that pulley set should just come right off leaving the one held on by the center bolt.
yeah those look rusted togeather. mine pop right off. you might wanna try using some penetrating oil, some heat (not much) and some physical persuasion to get them off.
Those pulleys are definitely rust bonded to the hub. See the part of the hub that protrudes out in the center, that all the pulleys & the ring fit over, much like a wheel & hub? That's where you'll want to concentrate a spray of PB blaster into, as well as the surfaces behind each pulley & hub. Give it lots of time to marinate, and if it looks like it's soaking in and drying up, give it more PB blaster, Then persuade the pulleys off with a plastic mallet from different angles, being careful not to deform the pulleys.
Thank you all for help, this is why i praise pb blaster, took me a few days of soaking and tapping, finally got them off. What a pain. Patience is always required with the RX7
