Thumbs up Want a Dog Box in my race car… any suggestions?

I've been looking into different dog box transmissions but not sure which will last the longest and be the best for my track car. The car is predicted to make between 600 - 700 WHP on my new setup so i need something that will handle the power yet be alright to take out on my sunday cruises. I want to keep it H pattern. Any suggestions?

dog box, meaning straight-cut gears, no synchros, full race, noisy, etc., etc., etc.?

for Sunday cruises ... why?

if you look through some of the big turbo 20B projects you should get some ideas on trannies that will hold the torque/power and still be civil for cruising. i believe one of the Mustang Cobra transmissions is a fairly popular choice, as is the manual from the last Pontiac GTO.

that said, if you're already decided on the race tranny, then i believe Logan (GtoRx7.) used one in his race car. i think he said it was an ex-NASCAR tranny or something, but i'm not sure. check out his thread or maybe contact Defined Autoworks directly.

By the time you make a transmission strong enough to handle the torque, the gears and shafting will be so heavy that synchronizers will not be happy with shifting at the RPMs you typically see from a 600-700whp rotary, so you need to get rid of the synchros Dog box doesn't necessarily mean straight cut oh my god make my ears quit bleeding NOISY trans, it just means you have dogs instead of synchronizers and splines.

I'm getting really tired of swapping out smoothcases, and I'm not really having any specific failure, I'm wrecking bearings and synchros and gears and the flippin' tailhousing bushings (especially after the first three let go and send crap floating through the trans) so I'm going with a T5 pretty soon, mainly because you can GET T5 parts, and rebuilding them is pretty simple. But they don't really like shifting much over 5000rpm and really don't like shifting over 7000 and I tend to shift at 9000+, so when I go T5, I'm going to have Liberty face-plate 2nd and 3rd gears. I don't ever drive fast enough to need a face plated 4th and I don't think bridge port drivability would mesh with face plating when driving in traffic anyway so I need 4th to be synchronized just so I don't beat up the dogs.

If I could start with ANY trans, I'd see if Richmond still does dog-box 4+1 units, or as mentioned go with an ex-NASCAR box. I'm starting with a T5 because I happened to get one with everything needed to bolt it up to a rotary.

I have a G-force built T5 with dog ring engagement, but its not going to handle 6-700whp. How serious of a track car is it? You could do a T56 magnum. Aside from that a nascar box or something as mentioned above is probably a decent bet.

Although i want to keep it "drivable" on the street at the end of the day it is a race car. I've looked a little into the cobra trans and gto trans but to my knowledge they don't like high rpm and i spend most of my time between 6k and 10k lol. thanks for the advice i will contact him for sure.

Thanks for the input and advice. I don't mind the noise since the car is loud as hell as it is. External pumps, straight 3.5 in exhaust, external gates and no sound deadening or interior hahah i keep a bottle of advil in my glove box anyway.. i am going to have it on the track in a few weeks for testing and once i blow up this stock trans after lap 2 I'm going to look into the nascar boxes. let me know how things go with the t5 please! what kind of power are you making?

About 230 at the crank, maybe 170ft-lb of torque or so.

Smoothcases are not strong transmissions.
