Question Rew?

Does anyone know what the REW (13B REW) stands for?

Ruins Everyone's Wallet.

This is why they are usually found in their native habitat of the FD, otherwise known as a Financial Disaster. However, a few have been spotted roaming the dens of FC's, or sometimes referred to as Financial Crisis.

The Cosmo 13b was RE, but the 20b was REW.

Actually no, the Cosmo was a 13B-REW even though the manifold says 13B-RE on it.

Really? Even though the ports and turbos are different? Do you have a reference?

I don't have the book in front of me so I cannot call out the page, but its listed as the 13B-REW in the FD RX7 Book.

Its also duly noted at wikepedia.

RE=Rotary Engine, but no reference to "W." Perhaps it was just an homage to Felix.

Perhaps the 'w' signifies the twin turbochargers.

Well, in that respect it does, but I can't imaging they arbitrarily used "w."

From http://www.fd3s.net/engine_tech.html ...

Mazda designated the new FD (3rd gen) engines as 13B-REW, as to denote the 13B short block lineage. The RE stands for "Rotary Engine". The "W" at the end is to designate "Double Turbochargers". Mazda didn't want to use the acronym "RED" for "Rotary Engine Double [Turbos]", so they used "Double-U" as a compromise, thus the "REW" suffix. I still think the notion that the engineeers were drinking too much one night and *REALLY* think they called it 13-BREW, as a more appropriate engine designation...

I'll go with the homage part. Sounds better.

The "W" refers to the number two in Japanese.

The housings are not the same. REW is Series 6 (S6) and I believe 1993+

Japanese language uses the letter "W", [daburu] as an ideogram meaning "double"

For example a double cheeseburger in the US is listed as :
Wチーズバーガー

Don't believe me.... take a look at this picture from a Japanese website.

I see what your saying. I may have taken W refers to two a bit more literal than I should have. As W was clearly not used in native Japanese so I think you would be hard pressed to find W without Katakana following it.
