Power Steering Question
I have had a problem with my power steering pump in my '85 GSL-se. I get a humming noise that increases with turns and with rpms. I originally thought that it was air in the line but I could not stop it with the turn method. Then I made an assumption that it may be the belt. I changed that yesterday but the noise still persists. My question is, Can I remove the belt and eliminate the power steering without doing harm to the unit or the engine. I have already done a search and I have seen mixed results where some people removed just the belt and others removed the pump itself. I eventually want to replace the pump when I get some extra cash which should be in about 2 months. So what do you think good or not to do?

I've done both. I first removed my P/S belt and drove around like that for awhile, then decided to go full race and ditched the p/s all together

Thanks for the info. I just removed the belt yesterday and drove it around today. It was not bad at all. It was a little stiff at a stand still but once you get moving you have a better feel of the road. It is also much better without that PS noise. I sounded like a wind up car.
