missions failure, and smoking

(first post attempt didnt work :-( )

Hi guys, Im new to this forum. I dont own an RX7 but im posting this on behalf of a friend. I dont know much them, so....

His RX7 (P reg, with 35k indicated on the clock) failed the mot last week. Idle emissions were fine but fast idle was well over. They garage tried replacing the lambda sensor (as they thought the emissions result indicated a knackered one) but that made no difference.

As far as he was aware its completely standard. I guess its possible someone has gutted the cat. would it produce these kinds of emissions results if they had?

secondly. The bloke at the garage then started it up, it smoked like a trooper for about 2 minutes getting progressively worse, blueish smoke, which eventually cleared and there was no smoke at all, even after about 5 minutes of idling (suggesting the turbo oil seals are ok at least).
Any ideas what could cause this smoking. it almost seems like a seal has gone somewhere, which is allowing the oil to enter the exhaust side and its being burnt off (hence it clearing)

thirdly. is there an easy way of checking for fault codes? on the gt4, we just have to bridge two pins in the diagnostic port, switch on teh ignition, and it flashes the engine warning light in a way that indicates the stored error number. is there an equivalent procedure on the rx7?

(Im asking this, as I wonder if its running in some kind of limp mode causing it to overfuel / retard the timing at higher revs)

thanks in advance. any ideas appreciated

regards
