Engine Oil
What's up guys? I'm a new member, I'm buying my first RX-7 tomarrow (2nd Gen '87) and my friend owns one. He was complaining that his car was suckin down the oil. So he took it to this mechanic that he really likes and trusts and he put in Valvoline 20W-40 in all his rotory motors he works on. Oil problem solved for the most part. Is this safe? Is it hurting the engine instead of using 10W-30?

Also +1 for NOT using Valvoline. Havoline was nice and clean for 3500+ miles, I've had Valvoline in there for about 2500 and it looks like crap.

Although it is expensive, I will go with royal purple. I changed to that and had an unbelievably better response in quickness and smoothness. I think they sell it on mazdatrix or racing beat, but I just buy it at pepboys.

Royal Purple is BEST
I've used Royal Purple in All 3 of our cars: '93 RX-7, '95 "Stillen" tuned Maxima and my wife's '95 Toyota Corolla. Noticed seat-of-the-pants acceleration improverment only in the Corolla, just as the Royal Purple website predicted for small displacement piston engines.
Noticed faster throttle "tip in" & improved gas mileage in both the Maxima and Corolla.
The RX-7 showed only quicker spool up of the turbos by 100 to 150 RPM.
I feel the added protection the oil gives to both the apex seals and the turbo shaft is worth the extra $$ and the slightly greater amount of oil used compared to Mobil 1.
