It is a really simple conversion. All you need is the distributor and coils. I think I spent a whole 30 minutes converting my REPU.

yup, get rid of the resistors. I think the years you need to get the dist from are 81 - 84. Just find one at the wrecking yard and take a look at it before you pull it apart. It really is quite a simple setup.

will the distributor from a 85 rx7 {12a ?} work in a 78 cosmo {13b} ???

I too would like to swap my points for electronic goodness, all my local wrecking yards have is the rx7s with the water oil coolers, = 83-85, which = 12a , yes ?

Yes it will work, the one I'm using on my '74 model 13b is actually from an '83 12a. Just make sure to get the coils too.

very cool !!

are there any tricky timing things that I need to be aware of ?

as in I figure that my getting a distributor from an 83-85 in the junkyard for my 78 13b should be pretty much exactly what you are running as far as port timing and distributor vaccume and centrifugal advances.

Just make sure to get the coils too.
aye, I figure to check the junkyard car wiring for any wierd connectors, anything else ?

sorry to ask so many questions but I wanna pick your brain for what you learned as much as you will tolerate

THANKS !!

Try to set the junkyard motor to the timing mark on the main pulley before yanking hte dizzy. Mark the dizzy so that you can get it in the same position when you try to put it back in your car. Set your car to the 0 timing mark before putting the new dizzy in. That should get you within a tooth of correct timing.

I would also be a good idea to get the wires with the plugs for the ignitors, just unplug them from the dizzy but leave them connected to the coils so nothing gets mixed up. The only wires u should have to disconnect to get all this out of the car is the wire for the tach, not sure the color, and the black wire w/white stripe fromt the + side of the coils.

O, and I don't use the vac advance. No vac lines going to dizzy.

U dont use the vaccuum advance? My REPU ran like crap without it. I could either get the idle good or the high load good but it was always a pretty bad compromise between the two conditions.

I have an '85 distributor in my '76 Cosmo. It came out of a GSL-SE and had a nice juicy 13B advance curve. I don't know if it's right for a carbed engine, but it's good enough. DLIDFIS helped it run even better.

aah, thanks

a bit of reading leads me to wanting another ignitor and coil so I can get some of that goodness.

I went to my favorite junkyard to snag the distributor & coils from their '85 and it was GONE ! the whole car had vanished in less than a week. odds are that it was crushed.

so I went to the only other local yard with an '85 on hand. it had been hit in the front, such that there was no way to crank it to 'tdc' before yanking the distributor.
ah well, I will just have to be as precise when installing it as I had planned to anyway

I wanted to snag the wires & plugs for the ignitors but the wires ran into a bundle that vanished off into the depths, since I will be making the wiring up anyway fabricating plug substitutes won't be difficult.

$50 for '85 distributor with ignitors, coils, and spark plug wires.
