13B miata

Hey guys, so I've decided to swap my miata with a 13b probably around sometime next year when I have the funds saved up . There are a few things I have in question about the swap however. I've heard rumor that the stock miata 5spd will bolt up to a s4/s5 13b with an rx7 bell housing and a miata clutch disc, then of course rx7 pressure plate and flywheel. I was wondering if there is any truth to this. Also the issue of motor mounts. From what I can see on my stock engine mounts (B6ZE RS) look very similar to the motor mounts on a 13B. I know plenty of people have done this swap and have said motor mounts were a minor issue. I was curious if anyone had any specifications of the mounting positions, moreover, how they did it lol. I have four main engines/trannys in mind.

-s4 n/a
-s4 turbo w/tranny
-s5 turbo w/tranny (If I can even find one)
-renesis msp 13b w/6spd tranny

Any of these would be great to have in my miata, it only weighs about 2100lbs and the stock engine has 116hp/100lbft, then take into consideration its 19 years old, take away about 14% of that from the drivetrain. so even 146hp from the s4 n/a would be loads of fun in my car. Especially with a streetport and supporting mods. I've seen people do for example an s4 n/a swap for around 1700 bucks. I've planned a budget of around $2500 to $3000 and if more is needed, so be it. but any input, ideas, or suggestions is appreciated.

it really looks like a great swap, 150hp/2200lbs is FUN.

anyways. the miata uses a powerplant frame, but otherwise uses a similar transmission to a non turbo rx7, so you can either put the rx7 bellhousing on the miata trans, which is ideal, the ratios are better, or you can put the miata tailshaft housing on the rx7 trans.

the power plant frame goes from the rear of the trans to diff, so if you wanted to put any other trans in, you'd have to fab a trans mount AND a diff mount.

i haven't actually done the swap, but i have measured the mounts, the miata and FC mounts are actually really close, the miata is narrower, but maybe like 1/2" or something, it looks like if you slotted a few holes the FC mounts would just drop into the miata subframe.

i havent done it though, so i can't comment on oil pan clearance. the miata engine is tall and narrow, the rotary is wider, but its actually almost square. so the front corners look tight, but it might just look tight.

the other minor issue is that the exhaust and fuel lines are opposite on the miata VS rx7.

Well in that case I would most def use an rx7 bell housing. my car has just 125k on it and its a virgin, single owner car. I'll have to post pics But I am very glad to hear that the motor mounts line up almost perfect. i remember looking on my s4 n/a rx7 and seeing the resemblance on my miata lol. I haven't heard of any issues of oil pan clearance. All of the other little things like exhaust, fuel lines, misc. things aren't a problem at all. My buddies and I have a shop that we do everything at, engine swaps, repairs, pretty much anything you can think of. its our personal garage, and we have almost every tool you can imagine, minus a lift lol. but I guess I need to start making a parts list of what I'm going to need. btw whats your opinion on Rtek?

the Rtek is nice, plug n play, but the problem is that it uses a palm to tune.

I too am currently assembling parts for my miata 13b turbo build. This forum has awesome detail on mating the miata and fc tranny together. He also has good detail about the oil pan clearance issues.

enjoy

The 13B powered Miata I did a little work on had an FB style front cover and used those mounts. IIRC they were solid mounts, as in, not enough room to clear the hood front mount plate bolted to a subframe that bridged the front frame horns.(The car was built by the previous owner, I just made it work right)

The car used the Miata trans with RX7 front half. I think there is an issue with the length of the input shaft going into a rotary though. I know there is when we use the Miata gear set in an RX box.
