13 B Identification

Help! I need to know how to identify one 13B from another.
After swapping in a 13 B into my 79 doner, I have a bad oil leak from around the pan. I ordered the new pan gasket and since I was there anyway, an oil pan baffle. I was told by the seller the engine was an 86 13B. I ordered the parts for that motor; neither fit. I'm assuming an 86 may be different from an 84 etc. I have an autocross on the 29th and I can put it back together with the old gasket, but I still need to know. Any help is much appreciated.

I believe the 89-91 has the knock sensor above the T1 whereas the 86-88 is NOT there Dunno where.

Hope this helps because that is all I can think of

My bad. I needed to ask about differentiating between 84, 85 and later models. The older block/case is about
1-1 1/2 longer. Now I have a gasket and baffle for the 86. Anyone want to buy them?

The older 12A is shorter than the 13B.

Ah but apparently from my view from under the car, the older 84-85 13B is longer than the 86 and up.

the 84-85 13b may be longer cause it has a different front cover. The engine mounts are on the front cover I believe, and on the 86+ the mounts are on the front end plate.

I thought you were saying the 12A was longer than the 13B

I think you mean the center plate? Also the 2nd gen has the pass mount through the oil pan.

there are several differences between the old 13Bs and the newer 13Bs ...

the ones that matters with respect to the oil pan are these:

1 - the older engines have a different shaped front cover (as Project84 stated)
2 - the newer ones are distinguished also by the little flap on the left side where it makes a provision for the engine mount
