Signatures -- Illogical Rules

I just had a comment regarding the rules for signatures. Currently, we are limited to 500 characters of text. Typed without doing stupid things like putting each mod on a separate line, this does not take up much room. Personally, I feel limited by the 500 characters restriction and have resorted to linking to my VB Garage instead.

However, at the same time, people are allowed to post 5"-6" high pictures EVERY single time they post. This is far more distracting, disrupting, and is annoying as ****, IMO.

I think a better solution would be to allow a certain number of lines of text with no character limits. And BAN pictures completely. Pictures consume more bandwidth than text and can easily be linked to in signatures. Just my 2 cents.

As far as signatures go, I don't use mine for an ego trip but to let people know what mods I have in case they are looking at the same products. I found this invaluable in my "younger" days when the older forum regulars used the signature appropriately.

Thanks.

Agreed.
I think pics in sigs should be BANNED.
Else, make people PAY to run pics in sigs.

Or have a standard size "banner" for sigs.

Sounds like a good idea. Maybe a limitation on the pic size, instead of a complete ban, will suffice.

Yes there is.

1. Custom signatures are enabled, but any graphics used in such signatures are limited to a 20K file size.

2. Signatures are limited to six lines of regular text, including blank lines, or the equivalent size in picture, or picture/text combination.
There used to be something in the rules about pixel size too I thought, but it seems to be gone. Either way you are only allowed 6 lines of text/picture combo. However, VERY many people do not follow this, even with warnings from moderators, it's hard to stop everyone and keep track of it all.

That's not the issue entirely. Even if it's hosted elsewhere it still takes time to load, slowing down the site since everyone has to load it. Remember not everyone has high speed internet

Threads with people who quote every freaking picture sucks. I usually close them because I can't load it (56k user).

Ok i am a 56k user. And because I live in west virginia and hardly anybody else uses the internet in my internet service area my 56k is on crack. Not super fast but faster than normal. I really dont have trouble loading sigs with pictures. Its just the ones that have moving GIFs in the sig. My avatar moves and it is usualy the last timng to load on the page.

I think that pics in sigs are awsome I wish I knew how to make one like 1985_RX-7s, I dont have any trouble loading those at all. The only things that bog down my loading is huge pics in sigs and the ones that move. I am not really complaining about the pictures in the sigs I just feel that there should be a limit to the size. Thats all.

Yep, I'd have to agree. I use my sig for the same purposes. In the local sections, it helps some of the other guys see what you have, while letting others know what you plan on doing if they've been down that road. In this sense, you don't always have to be present for someone to make some suggestions about your car, and they can just PM you if need be. I've had people sell me items that I've needed due to them being in my sig.

a lot of other boards have a limit of 600x120 pixels text and pics included in it every line of normal sized text is included in the 600x120. every line of text takes up 20 pixels of the height. this cuts down on a lot of problems with sigs
