Some Old In-Car from about 10 years Ago

I just found this old video of mine that I posted years ago;

http://video.google.ca/videoplay?doc...4121760373243#

You will need to click on the videogoogle.ca link at the bottom left for some reason to see it.

Anyways, in these video clips, I am running my original 1988 13b six port with about 200,000 kms on it and still beating the tar out of it. The car was able to consistently run in the 1:41's at Mosport and in 2000, I had a great year with 4 wins and 3 pole times. The race battling was very intense that year and the top 6 to 8 GTD runners would circulate in a pack, cutting and thrusting for the whole race. It was nuts.

As a side note, at the end of the video I am battling another white 2nd Gen RX7. That is the bridge port RX7 now owned by Al Balinsky, before he owned it. The race position that I captured in the last couple of corners was for 10th place overall and worth $250 in cashola.

I apologize for the graininess, but this was before HD, LOL.

That video was actually compiled from 1 Ontario Challange Race back in 2000. The rules were the same as today with break outs, bu what made it interesting was the addition of prize money to the top 10 finishers. We had grids of over 40 cars and to finish in the top 10 overall was pretty darn good. I finished 2nd in GTD.

The big thing was that all of us were running tires that were stickier than the amount of HP we had, so we could drive like wildmen all over the track. As well, we very rarely ever touched. I think the only damage I had that year was when I took 2 mirrors off trying to slice inside 2 cars running side by side and the inside wall at the apex of Turn 1. 1 mirror on the wall and the other taken off by the inside cars mirror.

Man that was fun.

TMP? I'm pretty sure I'll be there with camera-in-hand again. If there's a lot of 7's out this time on the road course I'll spend more time over there. Sorry to deflect from the OP. Continue with shared video awesomeness.

There are no vehicle age rules for CASC-OR racing. If there was 3/4 of the cars wouldn't be eligible. The old Ontario GT Challenge took some time off and has now been reborn again as a series of 1 hour and a couple of 3 hour races series. It is starting to pick up again and its pretty much the same as 10 years ago. What I like about 1 hour races is that as a driver you need to manage your tires and brakes and maybe even your fuel.

I am bringing out the RX7 again to run in the 3 Hour War Bonnet Enduro at Mosport in mid September. The car is running wonderful again and we are ready to go. I have a fuel sponsor, new tires and brakes. All I need is a fast and safe co-driver (I don't think I want to do 3 hours in the car). The other issue is that we more than likely, will only be able to go about 45 minutes on a tank of fuel. This means that we will need to make 3 stops. If I keep the rpm's down to under 8,000 then maybe we can stretch it to 1 hour. That would mean only 2 stops, but the car runs soooooooo slowly then, maybe 1:38's at best.

AAAAARRRRGGHHH, decisions decisions.

It's too bad I don't have a racing license, otherwise I'd try out for that co-driver position :P

I think what you are referring to is the second year of the Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship when they enacted some major rule changes to "Improve The Show!". In the second year after the name change from "Ontario Touring GT Championship", the rules makers removed all the GT Class cars (V8's and large displacement Turbo's) and restricted the field to cars bodies that had been sold in the last 10 years.

That was basically when I retired the RX7 and bought the Cougar, but now the costs to run the series are rather high and with my work and life commitments, it hasn't made sense for me to run either car. Last year I was out only one day in the RX7 (and still did well in GT4) and when Al left Scarboro Mazda it sorta reduced my enthusiasm to force myself to get out. This year I have been out for a test day in the RX7 and another one for the Cougar. Both cars are working very well, so now I am going to try to do some more races.

Why not make friends with the ottawa FD race team and do some more racing. I know funding has me staring at race cars for 18years without getting my own track car. At least I can afford the few open lapping days a year that i do. I will probable attempt some sort of time attack series such as sigma next year. (The solo racing series done by casc has way to little track time.)

I have spoken to the guys from Ottawa a number of times and we wave at each other in the pits.

What I was talking about is it was a ton of fun trash talking with Al and going over to Scarboro Mazda to set the car up. Now I have to use my house setup and it works, but its not so much fun.

Regarding at the track, I still really enjoy the on-track a ton, but I am not a fan of the "bracket" thing and I just can't justify the $5,000 a weekend to run in CCTCC unless I get a sponsor. Right now, I am looking at running the 3 Hour in the RX7 and a couple of GT Challenge races in the Cougar. They have a great blend of competitiveness to time to costs. I can do all the stuff in one day.
