-----

Hey Guys,

So a few months back I posted about my new Mazda6 and mentioned that my FB was starting into a new project.

Well I finally got some progress (and pics) to share with you guys, so I'd like to introduce Project Naomi

For any of you who've been around the Ottawa group for a few years, you've undoubtedly seen my Sunbeam Silver FB. On the forum it was last seen somewhere in the vicinity of the Titanic and the Last Supper (bonus points for anyone who can find those pics).

In November I dropped it off at ClassicAuto and asked Joe to hold it for the winter, so that we could start on the project first thing in the New Year when I was ready. In February I went back down to ClassicAuto, signed the papers, dropped the deposit and said "go!".

The scope is nothing short of a complete teardown and rebuild. I drove the car 600km to get to ClassicAuto, running perfectly, in one piece (more or less, damn groundhogs), and when I pick it up it will be ready to drive the 600km home.

They're stripping it right down to the metal. Glass has all been removed, interior completely stripped, the dash, carpet, and roof liner are out, suspension's coming off, engine and tranny will be coming out, the fuel lines, brake lines, the works.

Then it'll be mounted on a rotisserie/spit, sandblasted and chemical stripped down to the metal, any rust will be removed and new metal will be welded in, then it's primer, paint, clear, and reassembly.

In the process the whole interior is getting soundproofing (Second Skin's Damplifier Pro and Luxury Liner Pro), a whole new carpet set is going in (from stockinteriors.com), the engine bay wiring harness will be completely re-done with new connectors and wires, and any parts that don't look so awesome when they come off aren't going back on the car again. We'll replace things as needed if they don't look like they'll last at least another decade.

It's a hell of a project, so without further adieu I present the first pictures of progress on Project Naomi (ignore the timestamps on the pics, camera date is way off):

More Pictures...

Word has it that it should be mounted on the rotisserie by the end of this upcoming week

I can't wait to see what kind of crazyness is hidden under all that paint and rust. I know that the floors are all jacked up and need to be flattened/straightened, and that the front passenger fender, bumper valance, and brake ducts took a hit from a fairly fat groundhog... And that under the rubber molding on the driver's side I found patches of bondo, so we'll see what's revealed once all the paint comes off!

I'll update again as soon as I've got more

Jon

Awesome that you are doing this project. Looks like Joe is restoring more rotarys then any other body shop out there. Can't wait to see it. In fact I will probable see it before you. LOL

Yeah I don't get out that way very often, though more often than most folks from Ottawa ever end up in Hagersville I guess.

Joe's done quite a number of rotaries. The work he did on Sam's (dj55b), and my former friend Marc's FBs were what made me bring the project there... And I might be mistaken but I heard that Tony (silverrotor) had some work done there too that he was satisfied with, and the only person I know who's more protective of his car than Tony is Neo So you could say the shop came highly recommended!

We were off to a slow start, but it looks like they really hauled *** on the project the last month and after this update I'm feeling pretty good about it!

ClassicAuto - single-handedly saving the rotary legacy one car at a time!

New Update! (no pictures, but those should come fairly soon)

Its bascially all stripped now, just have to get it physically mounted to the spit. Very little welding and creativity left for mounting it.

What I've found in the front......there's no right inner fender I have one on the parts car though. Both of the steel brake ducts are pretty much shot. The right one is a crumpled pile of rusty junk, the left one is just really rotted. Not sure if you even want to put them back on, none of the one's I have on the parts car are any good either. The front bumper......really has alot of torn tabs on it. The lower valance is the same. I know we talked about limited availablity etc. but I might start poking around and seeing if I can find any - you may want to also. I can use the ones here, but I'll be unconfident that the bolts will hold it all together (the lower to the upper mostly) since 80% of the tabs are either ripped right off, or are now slots where they should be holes.

Also found some strange rust holes inside the cabin, where your feet would sit. I believe the sunroof drains are either out of place or split and leaking into a cavity there, will report back on that one.

So - mounting to spit next week, should be blasted by the end of the week

The bumper and valance aren't surprising - they got taken out by a groundhog hit on the highway last year. Same with the right brake duct. So now I'm looking for those bits if anyone has them, along with the door panels that I still haven't found.

I'll be re-doing the majority of the engine bay harness from scratch, it will be a hell of a job but I'd rather have good wiring in there that I know is solid since electrical issues are the worst issues in the world to troubleshoot.

I'm looking forward to pictures once it's on the spit!
