Potential convert needs a hand!
Potential convert needs a hand!
Hi there ladies and gents. I've been lurking for quite a while now, but i don't post much, as i don't have any rotary experience. I'm looking to get one, so I thought I'd post up a request.
I've been in love with FD RX7's since the first time i saw one. I test drove one about 7 years ago, and at the time it seemed like driving it was like sex on wheels... but then again, i had little experience with performance automobiles at the time.
I'm looking to buy one in the spring potentially, but I'm wondering if there's anyone local to me (Barrie, ON) that would be willing to meet up, take me for a spin, and acquaint me with some of the quirks of the car / things to look for when purchasing. Local meaning Barrie area, or even north GTA. I've had the dream of owning one for so long now, but i want to make sure that I want it because i actually really like it, and not because i'm viewing the FD RX7 through rose-coloured glasses of inexperience.
I'm not completely new to the sports / sporty car scene, as I am an SRT-4 owner. Please don't hold that against me though
... it WAS fairly well modded, but that's another story. I do have some experience with SRT4's, both stock, mopar modified, and aftermarket big-turbo, and i am familiar with the theory of how rotarys work, just never owned one or had to work on one.
If you can help me out and don't mind dropping in one afternoon, or being dropped in on, let me know.
Thanks in advance,
Matt

There are a few FD owners in the Aurora/Newmarket area. I know a few of them are on the forum, or know of it, but hardly post.
A bunch of local FD's could always get together and show you the ropes.

Nismo,
I guess you didn't read the news about DeLorens being reintroduced to the market. The chassis will be as close to the originals as possible, but with modern drive train and what not. So no reliability issues.
Then you can add the Mr. Fusion conversion! woohoo!

But i guess the DeLorean would be under warranty, that would make it rather easy.

Maybe I'm looking at this wrong, but it doesn't seem like much of a bargain. Grab a good condition original car, then spend $10K on a 13B turbo swap. You'll lose a few hundred pounds and pick up a few hundred horsepower...
You'd actually spend money on one of those things? Three times the price of a good original car, with only 60 more HP?

Aaron,
I was just pulling your leg buddy. As cool a replica would be, it's still not an original.
The DeLoren will always be my childhood fantasy car. Nothing cooler than a car which can travel through time when you hit 88mph!
Nismo,
How is the car? Haven't really heard much from that neck of the woods.

Many thanks go out to Jim. It was great to meet you, go for a spin, and get a little education. Definitely sealed the deal for me. I'll definitely be making a purchase, it's just a matter of time. ****, what a ride though!
I really like my SRT4.... but after a spin in an FD, it just seemed slow... fast for a neon, but slow and numb. Can't wait to see what next year will bring!

that was my thought as well. The only problem is finding one for a good price, that has a solid chassis and interior. I'm just going to assume that i'm going to require an engine build no matter what. I'd be happy to get one in decent running condition that's really clean body-wise that I can drive for the first summer, and then do a rebuild over the winter.

It's a car club that is situated mostly up in barrie and there are a few fd's on there as well as a bunch of other cars. It's a good club that has alot of meets and helps eachother out.

It was great to meet you as well, thanks for the kind comments. It's always fun to flog the car for someone and show them how a rotary should run....there's more fun to be had, see you at the track....
Looking forward to the track!
