They may be black but the ones you show in the picture look like they are manufactured in Europe. The real ones are made in Japan.

all the Mazda OEM filters are just re-badged versions of some other manufacturer's. the OEM filters in Japan, which were black, was a re-badged filter that was pretty good (i can't recall what the particular filter is off the top of my head).

here in Canada they re-badged a filter that is just standard, something along the lines of a Fram filter. those are the blue coloured filters.
honestly there is nothing to worry about, they will do the job.

And there are some that are better than others, paper filters are junk, gauze filters are junk but way better, a metalic mesh filter is likely your best bet filtering down to something like 5 microns, but something like that would clog way too easily, and they don't make them for cars that I know of. So gauze is the best that is widely available, the old Forumla 1 filters were really nice, but Crappy T put the kibosh on that, the teflon "O" ring was sweet never had an issue getting that bastard off, the NAPA gold are the same ones I think made by Purolator or some company.

If you are changing your oil every 3k kms I don't think any filter can be "bad".Since most people do short oil changes the Mazda`Canada filters are fine.I have used nothing else in 16 years of RX7s and never had a lubrication issue.

OKay dudes, for the last time try and follow along. There are probably like 10 companies on earth that make oil filters. HOWEVER, the auto manufacturors supply their specs to these companies. A generic Fram, Wix or whatever is a universal filter for many different applications. A filter made specifically for say Mazda to badge and brand as their own would have specific pressure reliefs etc built in where as the generic one wouldnt. Its really not that complicated. Buy whatever you want, but a Motorcraft, Goodwrench, Mopar, Mazda or whatever is designed to that specific manufacturors specs.

Talking WHAAAATTTTT!!!!!! Heresy, I say Heresy!!!

Al you are totally wrong. I heard on the radio this morning that you have some cars with special aerodynamic oil drain bolts that require special magic wrenches, only available in Japan, to remove.

You must be wrong. Mazda must have special custom oil filters made that use the fur from virgin Alpaca goats, woven by a lost tribe of Mayan warrior princess', to standards determined by a rogue group of ex-Communist aerospace scientists.

Or at least thats what I have heard.

Please Mods, make this thread die.

Yeah, thats how it works, companies contract things like this out, they can specify specs all they want, I have yet to see a OEM oil filter that uses a Fabric filtering media, so please try to follow along; it stands up to heat better than paper.(sorry cardboard)... What happens when you get a news paper, or cardboard box wet? It breaks down right? This can introduce more crap into the lubrication system.

Why Black filters are better? There are only 1 reason:

1) They are made by The Stig.

If it wasn't so funny, I just might do that.

Here, let's add some gas to the fire... or in this case, oil!

Personally I jump across the US border and grab Purolator PureONE oil filters (PL14459). Larger surface area of filtering media, the filtering media is fabric, and the most important thing for me : it has an anti-drainback valve. Since the filter on my FB sits with the open end down, I figure you'd want to have it retain oil since you don't want to waste the time filling the filter every time you turn the car on. Yeah it's only half a second, but I still think it's cool that after 6mo of sitting in storage I can take off my oil filter and it's still full of oil.

Plus it's a cooler shade of blue... and it's bigger and heavier (which, if you've ever watched Jurassic Park you'll remember the quote "Is it heavy" "Yeah!" "Then it's expensive put it away")

Jon

These black ones I had bought have german writing on them. So I'm assuming they are made in Germany.

I got them from Mazdaspeed Motorsports about 2 years ago when I did a huge order for engine parts. Reason why I went with them was because they were even cheaper in price than going to the local Mazda Dealership with Rx7club discount and ordering a 6 pack.

I do agree that the WIX filter is a good filter. The K&N is nice too but $$$. I change my oil and filter before each track day and solo1 event. Well I used to when the car ran.
