I'm not that worried about it, I'm sure pretty much anything one picks is fine, but I thought it would be interesting to add my investigation about the filter and now that they don't sell it come up with an alternative.

LOL... Probably because some of us still hold out some faint hope that together we can shame Fram into building better filters, and dealers into boycotting Fram until they do.

Feds: My point is: An OEM specifies what a part has to do, and how long it has to do it for. You stick to that schedule, you're o.k.
That would be great, if Frams could be counted on to even perform up to OEM spec - but tests have shown they don't consistently. Fram's shoddy construction cost me a motor a few years back - I did an oil change, and immediately noticed my oil pressure was actually higher than usual. It was during a cold spell, and I just assumed the oil was thick. After a few days the top end (piston engine in a Nissan, not my RX) seized up.
Taking the motor apart I found a rubber band from inside the oil filter had passed thru and subsequently blocked the oil passage to the head. I assumed this was a case of a disgruntled employee putting a foreign object in the filter (I did go after Fram to pay for my damages - didn't get anything out of them for my labour tho'). I later found out this rubber band is there as part of the assemby process on Fram filters - and can be dislodged and passed due to the generally shoddy construction (and if a rubber band can be passed, what does it stop?). I've also found since that time that my case is not an isolated incident - it occurs with some regularity, and Fram just pays out damages if pressed long enough when it happens, along with making you sign a non-disclosure agreement to get your money (oops, guess I just blew that )

10cc: Like FEDS said, if you change the filter often, you won't have a problem. Now to the math. Filter - about $13.00. Engine - about $2000.00
If the Mazda Blue filter is a Fram, this really doesn't make sense, as you are both paying more for the same Fram filter and because of the shoddy construction and filtering increasing the risk of having to replace that $2000 engine. Note my engine was ruined immediately after replacing the filter.

some of us still hold out some faint hope that together we can shame Fram into building better filters, and dealers into boycotting Fram until they do
Absolutely! And everyone should know that you get what you pay for if you buy the cheap Frams or Motomaster rebadge - and don't get what you pay for if you're paying extra for a blue-painted Fram from Mazda.

Did they happen to have the black Valvoline filters in stock? Those are Purolators too.

HP-1004 is equivilant to a 3593A.

Metal end plates, 20 micon filtering....

I just happened to be in Ogdensburg last weekend, and made a point to pick up a pair of Purolator "PureOne" filters. Now that I've seen the difference, I will never go back to anything less! Metal end plates, metal centre, silicon anti-drain-back valve, and good filter media....

And even the colour is a nice sparkly blue.

Heh heh heh... that's what makes these forums so great. Shared knowledge is power. It empowers purveyors of good products and exposes not-so-good and/ or over-priced ones. Everybody benefits and nobody complains--- except maybe for those who used to do a booming business selling less-than-stellar products.

BTW, notice I didn't specifically mention O.F.'s...

Talking Questions on the JDM Filters

Jamie, if you were to cut the filter apart, how long would the filtering element stretch out to? Also what is the actual filtration capability of these filters? Are they better than a green Wix? A Fram Long Life? A Mazda Factory filter, you know the black ones versus the light blue ones? How about the Quaker State filter or the plain white Canadian Tire filter? I really really really need to know. This is an absolutely wonderful development in the ongoing "Ultimate Mazda Oil Filter" quest, Mazda Canada conspirancy information base. I am just so thrilled.............

Sorry my pills had worn off and for a moment lost my head. Jamie just for you, for bringing this thread back to life, GLAAAARRRRGH. Wheel cleaning and bearing packing for you.

Thank you for making my day just that much more cheery.

Eric,

Perhaps you missed the point. THESE THINGS HAVE JAPANESE WRITING ON THEM!!!!!

None of that technical garbage matters in the face of overwhelming evidence of JAPANESE WRITING!!! As we all know, when it comes to cars: Italian > Japanese > everything else. Scientific evidence is not necessary to back this up.

In conclusion, I'll wash wheels and pack bearings, but I intend to do it really half ***-ed.

My beater (90mx6) uses nothing but Mazda Blue Oil filter!

Currently I have 4 used oil filters waiting to go into the mx6. Any of you guys want to buy it?

I'll have another one soon when I take the FD out for the summer.

Just keeping this thread going for the hell of it...

Amsoil filters for consideration?

Has anyone looked at the Amsoil Super Duty filters?

www.amsoil.com/storefront/sdf.aspx

Part number SDF-13 is for our engine. Sounds like a lot higher quality media than the standard paper filters out there, and would especially make sense if you plan on using synthetic oil where you can use the filter for several oil changes offsetting some of the cost.

In my case, I'm probably going to try this filter with the Series 2000 20W-50 synthetic racing oil:

www.amsoil.com/storefront/tro.aspx

This makes sense for me as my vehicle will see low mileage (little to no street), high stress (track) use where I'll only change the filter once a year. So spending $15 on a filter is not a concern compared to the peace of mind it offers me.

Correction, the Amsoil filter should be SDF-15 which has a 3/4"-16 thread versus the SDF-13 which has a 20mm x 1.5mm thread. The SDF-13 is apparently incorrectly stated on the Amsoil site for the RX-7.

Umm, I think I was correct originally when I stated the SDF-13 (20mm x 1.5mm) filter is the one we want. I wish I could delete my own stupid posts
