Congratulations!

I can't wait to get my vert back up and running again, it' been a few months.

 

Those first three weeks after I got my car running were pure bliss. Then at the end of the third week satan reachedup, poked my pulsation dampener, and unleased his flames on my engine. Luckily I happened to have a jug of water in my car and I put it out before it got too bad. I will be investing in an extinguisher in the mean time.

Now I'm rewiring and I've hit a snag. There's a squid coming in from the driver side and I can't remember what one of the melty connectors is supposed to go to. I took a picture and color coded to see if anyone would recognize it. The red one is my primary injector, the yellow is the secondary, green is the temp sensor, what is that fourth one I labeled blue?

 

Looks like the o2 sensor to me. I'm not sure though. I'm really sad to hear this happened.

 

 

Ding ding ding! I just traced my o2 sensor wire and it went to a melty end that had fallen to the side where I didn't see it. that was the only mystery so now I just rewire, redo vacuum (I did the rats nest removal so there's not that much to do), replace a few fuel lines, and wait for my injectors to get back. I figured now was as good a time as any to have them rebuilt.

Well wish me luck, I think I'll have it together by this time next week. Also stay tuned for my new anti-fire invention, I will ensure this never happens again.

I have removed all fire and fire related things from my car. I just moved to Dallas 3 weeks ago and now live 20 minutes from Rotary Performance. They had a new pulsation dampener, new omp lines and even injector cable heads for me to crimp onto some new wire as seen below.



While they were out I sent the injectors to RC Engineering and had them rebuilt. I then set about finding a solution to this well known problem. As we all know when the pulsation dampener goes it leaks/sprays fuel out of the end. So I wondered, why can't I just re-rout that fuel?


Behold, the 1 1/2" ID rubber hose! Now if this one ever goes out I'll just lose fuel pressure, get shitty mileage, and smell gas without the regular effects like fire. The only problem is it seemed so simple I can't shake the feeling that someone else has done this and it doesn't work somehow. I can't personally figure out how this could go bad, what do you think?

 

i dont think thats a good idea! if anything, route that hose to the driver side. why not just cut and weld so the PD is completely removed?

the picture perspective may give off the wrong impression but I have it tight against the body and touching nothing else. It goes past the exhaust so if gas ever does come out it will go straight to the ground. The zip ties holding it to the body are just temporary until I can get some bailing wire or something a bit more permanent.

As for removing the pulsation dampener I don't have the tools to do something like that. For now I have a brand new one and just figured I'd try something to prevent this from happening again on down the line.

 

Think of the money you will spend if it does catch fire again! There must be someone local that can weld and it should be very simple to do. We're talkin like 25 bucks.

What if the fuel coming from that hose splashes on the down pipe while your driving? Looks scary!

so ive been doing some port work to my spare engine. i used a pineapple racing large street port template along with some racing beat porting tools. i started with the rear iron and kinda ruined it oh well. i cut into the oil control ring area.

any way heres some pics.

Question - how hard has it been to do your own porting with the tools and template?

 

It's actually pretty difficult! I would recommend getting some crapy irons and housings to practice on. If your using air tools start with a lower air pressure so it will make a slower cut, then increase as you feel more comfortable. It's definitely something that takes practice. The mazdatrix DVD has some really good tips in it as well.

 

Back to that hose... If the damper fails, it's still failing and dumping fuel. You don't want it to fail in the first place. Eliminate it! Spend the money, and get an after market FPR, they have pulsation dampers built in.

It's still burning oil :/ I'm hoping to have it out next week! I'm kinda excited to find the problem. After doing a lot of searching on the forum I'm pretty sure it's a oil control ring. Luckily we have experienced builders like rotary evolution that have already answered every question possible.

 

practicing on spare housings helps a lot! just make sure you have the right tools! carbite cutting burs, a good assortment of stones, and lots of sand paper rolls! and I don't know if I would consider that iron bad yet. I raid a thread on porting somewhere on here before were some guy said he ported past the first oil control ring and the engine ran just fine and didn't burn any extra oil. cause I mean if you think about it you have 2 oil control rings. as long as you have one good one that's not riding over the opening of the port you shouldn't leak oil in to the intake port supposedly. I will have to see if I can find that thread again.

 

i got a new shell

its ready for a cage, lexan and all that other good stuff.

ill probably put a thread up in the drift section for it this winter.
