Update:

"Late night diligence"

Last night I was able to get some much needed cleaning and prep done on my fuel system and turbo kit.

When I say diligence. I mean it's one of those things you hate to do because there is nothing enjoyable about it. I lost nearly 3.5-4 Quarts of Oil due to the Iron crack. There is splatter mark of where the oil Hit my Hood and my hood acted as the perfect diffuser to spread Nice fresh 5-30 All over everything in the bay. There is no question to it......It just HAS to be cleaned. I started with my Fuel system lines/LIM/Rails/Injectors/Heat sleeve. I had to take it all apart to clean everything because the oil spread like the plague. I originally cringed upon my first real inspection because I figured the Oil had made it's way in between the heat sleeving and the actual line...but looking closer,....there were only very small sections that's had been compromised. So I didn't need to remove much of it at all. Just a couple frayed ends etc.
I pulled my I.D. injectors out of a bag I had put them in to re-inspect. They were the only things I pulled immediately and cleaned with brake cleaner and Regular gasoline because I've heard Ethanol has been known to gunk up injectors if you let the alky sit for a while. After I cleaned them, I put them in a little sealed zip-loc and set them aside. Everything else sat up until last night with Oil ALL over it. But I pulled the Top hats off the injectors to inspect the O-rings and they were good. Pulled the Full Function Engineering INjector seats off the bottom on the Nozzle side of the I.D.'s and found that one of the Yellow O-rings was cracked halfway through. I couldnt' force myself to re-use it. "preventative maintenance, so luckily I had ordered spares a while back. Replated the O-rings..completely cleaned out the EXCESSIVE LIM with Brake cleaner and a wire brush, Installed the secondary Rail with I.D. 2k's, and realized that one of my Helicoil's was sticking out on the thread "In" side about half a thread. ....sooooOCD kicked in....I un installed the entire assembly.. pulled the old helicoil out...and re-installed another Helicoil kit to fit my standards. Re-installed everything. Had to clean the LIM one last time, sealed it with Masking tape, closed off my fuel lines and set the assembly aside for quick install when we get the engine back together.
Next was my EFR turbo kit. Luckily....there wasn't much Oil on the assembly. The EFR8374, Turblown Long runner Manifold,Dual Turbo-smart comp gate 40's, Turbosource Inconel shield and heat sleeve just needed a quick brake clean spray and wipe up. But there wasn't much Oil on it at all. Prob burned off or luckily escaped the golden shower.....HaHa. I inspected the Turblown Long runner manifold flange and it looks straight as ever. Put my flat edge on it and confirmed. Low EGT's are good for everything it seems. With that completed I set my turbo assembly in the "ready to install" group and went to inspect the massacre of an engine bay.
My sub-frame was filled with oil......everywhere. Luckily a lot of my Wiring was covered by the UIM but there were sections that I had to suck it up and really clean to get the oil off. Worst thing is grabbing a wire or lead and getting oil on your hand. I Hate that...or touching something and immediately having to wash your hands because of gunk, soot, oil...dirt..you name it. So Clean I did. For nearly an hour...and I haven't even gotten to the under-carriage Worse areas were the hollows in between the partitions of the Sub-frame. Getting in there was a task. Used 2 full cans of Brake cleaner....so I have to go get more. But this wasn't much fun. Aside from that, the wheel wells, side frame areas weren't all that oily. Spots here and there. Saved my lovely Hot Magenta paint. Cleaned off the Hood and decided to call it a night.

So today I'll be able to get to cleaning the Under-carriage, cleaning and prepping the UIM and organize my tools so that when the engine keg is finished sat or sunday morning.. I can come home and install it ASAP. I need at least 2 Days to put miles on the set up. My largest worry aside from not making the event is Being "That Guy" at ASB14 and messing up everyone's session. The car needs to be in tip top shape. Which means, no leaks, No spots, no drips..not a single mist of anything that could potentially make a mess of the track. Over Half my Tire money has been re-routed to fixing the car in parts etc. So I'm not going to have much tire for the weekend. But I should have at least 4 Sets. Anyways. Back to Getting the wolf back to life. As long as everything goes smoothly..there really isn't much else to do other than being diligent in installing, everything....which really does take care. I'm so far past using any bolt to fasten something....or letting something go that questions my "piece of mind." Because every time you do that....it brings a potential failure point to the table. And the track will Eat it up... the track WILL EXPOSE ALL of these little dumb things that are overlooked. It's to the point where If I see a fastener with a gnulled thread... I throw it away immediately. These things matter...and those who take care of these things...see less troubles/failures/breaks....guaranteed.
Anyways...I could go on but here are some pics!!

Nice Clean Turbo system. The Turblown Long runner manifold is Awesome. Turned a nice rainbowish hue all over. Turbosource Inconel Turbo Gasket Shows zero signs of Fatigue..excessive heat/Blow out/leaking...or wear at all..so it stays un-touched..and installed. Aint broke...don't touch it. And the Turbo-Smart Comp Gate 40's look brand new still......aside from their Rainbow Hue.

Itinerary:

- Clean and Prep Chassis and Parts for re-installation
-Move turbo Oil feed line to Filter Pedestal (decided there are more benefits to moving it than simply getting a replacement fitting) Although I will be correctly blocking it off with the correct size fitting.
-Re-build engine sat/sun
-Re-install Engine Sun
-Start New set up Monday
-Test set up Mon-fri

- All Star Bash 2014

I understand what you are saying Aaron, there is a lot of misinformation going around on the forum because people repeat other members statements as facts and this can be confusing to newcomers. It certainly was the case for me, I even went thru that phase of repeating misinformation, now I don't say anything unless I know im correct. You really do have to know who to listen to on forum boards(not just this one of course). But what do I know, my car hasn't ran in 4+ years HAHAHAHAHA

Where did you get those bolts or whatever to plug the two extra injector ports? I've had issues with my plugs blowing out so I started looking into something like this, i.e. threaded inserts of some sort, but everything I'd found I'm not sure will work. My only concern with that is if I want to add injectors there later, how to fix the hole so I can do that.

Yeah! and then if you want to use them in the future, you just drill out the threads and switch to bigger o-rings.

Update:

"Stressed with 3 days to go.....and given the opportunity of a lifetime."

Well I figured I'd come give everyone an update... Calm before the storm.

Over the weekend I was able to partake in one of the most humbling experiences of my entire life. I was able to assist Abel Ibarra in the tear down and rebuild of my engine.

We started after 7Pm on Saturday night. Complete Tear down and inspection of my engine.
I've taken 4 engines apart on my own thus far and it usually didn't take me very long. But for Abel.... it literally took 15 min. I couldn't imagine how many times he's done this. And his Shop was a rotary heaven. I won't even disclose some of the stuff I saw. But all I can say is that it was truly an Honor to help him with my engine.

The good news is that there was zero damage to any hard parts or seals. Abel double checked everything once it was completely apart by going through the front and rear rotors individually. But there was no Damage. As you could imagine....I was very relieved at that. Side seals,springs/apex seals/springs...all in great useable condition.

I left late Sat night with high hopes and ready to start midday Sunday.

Sunday I got to Abel's garage around 2 in the afternoon and watched Abel clean my rear Iron with strict diligence and an uncompromising ethic. WHen he was finished...the Iron looked Brand new. He handed me the Intermediate Iron and said "do what I just did." and smiled.

Over the next 9 Hours... I was taught one of the best life lessons any rotary enthusiast could ever wish to endure. And at the end of it... I wasn't given an engine... But a full course on the breakdown and rebuild of an engine. My engine was back together with the Turblown Stud kit found here:
13B Engine Stud Kit - Turblown Engineering
When I told abel I had purchased a stud kit he seemed uncertain. He said "i'll be the judge of whether you'll put them in or not." I simply nodded and couldn't argue. But after he sat and inspected the studs... He looked at me and said. Good job man. I'll make a note to let Elliot know these are excellent and will help out tremendously.

After cleaning for hours and hours amongst doing all the extra prep work abel had instructed me to do we worked the entire day and into the night. We only stopped to eat twice but at the end of the night. My engine was complete. There are so many little tricks of the trade and little tid-bits that people would never think about and or come to see that Abel has simply made his standard. This guy knows his stuff...and any questions that had arose in my mind over the past couple years regarding him vanished over the weekend and were replaced with 100% gratitude and respect. He showed me his competition rig which was like a rolling 5 star shop. A giant 35 ft Plus Tractor trailer... I couldn't imagine showing up to a race in something so awesome. And the thing is... this stuff isn't sponsor owned. This was all his. What looked like a lifetime of success in racing and building his own race team. Engines.....assembled by himself. Tuning....done by himself. Travel...provided by himself, Set up...driving...everything done by himself. An incredible amount of work for a single person and even now thinking about it...it gives me chills. This past weekend...although things have been rough luck with the engine mishap so close to ASB14... I wouldn't trade the experience for the world. This assembly was more art than anything else.. something that any shoe horned swap could never touch and that I am forever thankful for. Because this past weekend... I wasn't given a fish...but I was given the gift of the knowledge of "how."

I could go on and on...but here are some pics:

And so The journey continues. And so I have 3 days to have the car back together. So I may or may not be checking in if I get a chance to breathe over the next few days. But know that I won't give up until all options are 100% exhausted.

ASB2014 Or bust

Updates soon...

Stay tuned..

I could only wish to have the experience you did! I have watched countless hours of rebuild videos on these engines and I am still a little to nervous to take on the rebuild myself! But I will sure as hell buy that stud kit!

Small Update:

"A Glimpse of Light"

Yesterday was a long day. Work hours seemed to drag on and on. I had to order a couple AN fittings and hose for the modifications I've made to the block. So I did that before I went in to work. I had to be careful on which brand of fitting I ordered because some of them said would be delivered by the 16th and some of them said after the 20th. the 20th....ain't going to be doing me much good. Finally after work I was off and went straight to Autozone to grab oil and a new filter. I was going to use my old Oil filter since it literally had 10 miles on it with fresh oil. But figured it was a bad omen and not worth using on the new rebuild. Chose Mobile 1 10-30 this time around due to the recent drop in Temperature. it's consistently been 50-55 degrees in the AM and it's not heating up much past 85 lately...so 10-30 it is. Regular Bosch 3300 Filter and were good on oil. Forgot to grab another gallon of distilled water but I'll be doing that today on my lunch break. So I had to head back down to pick up the engine last night. I left at 8:45 pm... got down to abels by 10 something PM. He had gone ahead and installed my Exedy twin disc and water pump housing/pullies/trigger as well. Despite how tired both of us were... we couldn't help but chat for an hour or so about happenings and rotary gossip/aspects of life....But eventually I was back on the road to make the trek back home. Hour and a half cruise back up to the high desert. Stopped and got a giant coffee and mainlined my system with coffee and two of those "Stoke" high caffeine shots and I was on my way. At this point I was dead tired....had to be 1 am at least. All I remember is being awake...feeling tired...but very alert. Theres no way these high caffeine shots can be good for you. But they sure as hell kept me up and awake the entire drive home. I think I got in bad at 3:45ish. So here I am.... Up at 6:30... Drank coffee but I feel like I shouldn't have anymore after those crazy Stoke Caf shots. But I must admit...I'm def feeling it right now...I haven't been this tired in a long long time. More updates soon as I get the engine in and sorted out.

Stay Tuned!

Updates soon!!!

This pic about sums it all up....

Late night freeway cruise... thinking time....with a couple good albums...looking in the rear view... headlights shadowed by the Burden...the love....obsession of my life....the 13B

What is the logic behind switching from 5w-30 to 10w-30 when it gets colder out? Should be the other way around no?

There is non because I definitely made a booboo. Mixed that up pretty bad. You are correct that is correct. I am currently running 10W30.

The metal seats of the exhaust port had no signs of leaking. I checked very frequently. There weren't any leaks. I am positive of that

The Turblown stud kit is very nice. Abel Ibarra was very Impressed....and stated he'd be purchasing a kit for his rx3 EFR9180 Build.....that should be at seven stock this year.

Update: “ A Sigh of Relief”

You know……I’ve never pushed myself this hard in my life. I’d consider myself a very patient person and hard to discourage. In most cases, when things don’t go in my favor….I get down to an extent…but I know I won’t be giving up. Things could go horrendously wrong….and trust me when I say that I’m in the gutter….. because I probably am at that point..but deep down.. the fire burns, and I know I’ll simply have to do what it takes to overcome the odds. This time around was the ultimate test of my life. My largest obstacle was time…and to make up the deficit. I simply pulled those hours from my sleep schedule. My favorite saying lately… “Sleep when you’re dead.” -and this statement wrung true. SOO let’s get started.
The days are all blended together so bare with me if I’m off a day or so but from memory. There was no engine in my car on Wednesday. By Thursday the engine was in But I still needed to relocate an oil feed to my turbo as well as a very important mod that Abel highly recommended which involved me relocating a -8AN to feed Oil straight to my Front Eccentric Shaft bearing. The machining was finished the day I dropped the Engine and New iron off a week and a half before this. What was causing the issue was finding the correct fitting and getting the Oil filter Pedestal to seal completely. This is all High pressure…and for those of you guys unfamiliar. These motors see 90-105PSI of oil pressure normally….I’ve seen as high as 120PSI. So it’s really important to get a seal on all oil lines/fittings….as it is with every car. On Thursday All I needed to do was fasten the -8 AN fitting and extend my Oil feed to the turbo to reach the new source at the filter pedestal. Well, I was starting to feel good about the progress I had made and that I had planned accordingly when I realized I didn’t have a long enough piece of -4 Stainless braided line that would reach from the new oil filter pedestal to my turbo oil feed. So I pulled out my spare AN box to see if I could create a sort of bridge…so there would be 2 lines kind of daisy chaining them along. This would work just fine….And I did. Except it was on another Line I had started with over a year ago. So I grabbed the line and my adjustable wrenches and the second turn snapped the fitting clear off while backing it out to swap lines. I took a deep breath and looked through my garage for 45 min… I couldn’t find a damn thing. So I ran to Pep boys and they had nothing. Drove across town to a Local race shop called R and E racing and THEY HAD IT! Not only that…but they had a full -4AN High Pressure Crimped line in exactly 14”….which was perfect for me. Only 24 bucks. Swooped it up and went home. Hooked it up and all I needed to do was fill up my coolant system, screw on the new -8 line from the Oil filter Pedestal to the front Iron and Start the car. And so I did…..except in the process of the rebuild and tear down of the engine mixed with lack of sleep…I realized I forgot my coolant filler neck cap. I thought to myself “no problem, I’ve got like 6 OEM ones that will be fine.” 45Min later I was literally at about a level 8 because this was one of the bags I kept handy along with other spare bags. SO I ran to Autozone and picked one up, went and got some food because I hadn’t slept in a while and headed back to the garage. It was finally time to start the car up. Made sure my oil level was good/coolant level was good…. And cranked it over,…BAM fired right up and sounded great. Instantly checked all fuel line connections, followed by water connections…and then my heart jumped because I forgot I needed to check all the NEW Oil Lines… looked under the car and sure enough had a pretty bad oil leak….right under my oil filter pedestal. BUT everything was good! I was really exhausted so I cleaned up the oil mess, and started double checking everything else. Went to sleep around 3am on Thursday night. Woke up at 6 on Friday morning and went to work in a slight haze. ..you know that feeling when even a good breakfast and some nice strong espresso do you no good? Yea …that was me. But there was some light….because I guess our company was doing a Team building thingie at the mall… So we all went, they took us to Bj’s after….pretty sweet because I was starving and they let us off at 1 in the afternoon. I was stoked….. Got out of there with the quickness…

So I pulled the Upper Intake manifold off and tightened the fitting that was leaking. Put everything back and started the car…. Still leaking. But it was leaking less now. ….which was annoying…but progress non the less. So I pulled the Upper Intake Manfold off..and tightened it down more. Put everything Back, started the car and STILL had a leak. But this time I was a little More than it was before… I was getting pretty frustrated at this point because it takes me about 10 min to put the UIM on and connect all the connectors. But the -8 for the new Oil mod is alllll the way up against the fire wall and I didn’t have a size 21 wrench so I was micky mousing with an adjustable one which would allow about ¼ Inch of turn every time…and that every time was very tight and hard to get to. This sounds really stupid. But It was a catastrophy from there on out. I had my friends calling me asking me why I wasn’t at the track yet, and other buddies asking me where I was, and my GF calling me, and I was hungry, and this bloody leak was impossible to fix. I pulled the UIM off and on over the next 4 or 5 hours Countless times… Until I finally spent the time to re-seal the actual pedestal to the IRON,.. after cleaning it thoroughly with Brake cleaner, tightened down all my fittings securely and was overly tired. Jumped in the car and started the car… Instantly I jumped down onto my stomach to see if I had a leak. To my surprise…and utter devestation.. there was OIL EVERYWHERE. Jumped up….turned the car off an Silently Cursed myself. It was 1:30Am at this point and I walked out into the middle of the street andclosed my eyes. There was no way I was going to make it to the Drivers meeting the next morning at 8 AM. I Cursed myself over and over for Lack of discipline in rushing the Job instead of taking my time on it and being meticulous. I felt Like quitting. But I had done soo much and Worked so hard,…..pushed myself to my breaking point mentally and physically as I was Beat tired. I was on hour 10 of making sure this car was ready... So I walked inside and quit. Started Washing my hands and kinda just let it all soak in for a second. Realized I was being a little B went back out into the garage and cleaned up 4 qts Of oil….which I’m sure you guys know isn’t the funnest job when you discouraged and pissed. 15 min later I had it all cleaned up and taken care of. Luckily I had 5 qts of 10W30 Full Synth for some reason? So I started filling it up and NO JOKE…halfway dozed off filling oil into my filler neck… caught myself and shook it out. Looked at how much oil I had poured in and knew I over filled it. Got under my car and drained a full qt out and fumbled the drain bolt and oil went all over the ground. I got the Bolt in to stop the dump….. Took a deep breath..looked up at my car lying on my back underneath it and started to laugh. I was so tired I actually dozed off like when your overly tired and have to drive home on a desolate road. So I cleaned up the mess. Checked my oil level and it was good.. And called it a night. I was making mistakes because I wasn’t thinking straight. I took a shower, set 4 Alarms at 2 Min intervals at 7 AM to make sure I wouldn’t over sleep and passed out. Now I don’t know If I was dreaming or if this was before I had fallen asleep…. But I remember telling myself the whole time that I was soo close…. And to just do it once… and do it right.
I woke up, had 3 shots of espresso, skipped breakfast…. And went to work. Pulled the Upper Intake Manifold Off, Took a look at the Oil Filter Pedestal…and knew If I wanted to do this… I couldn’t Micky Mouse it any more. Jumped in my car and went to Autozone. I had used the rest of the brake cleaner on the garage floor (a good clean garage is good for the spirit). Picked up 3 cans of Brake Cleaner and went straight to Harbor Freight to get a larger wrench set. Picked it up… went home and by this time it was 9:30 and I knew ASB had officially begun. I sent my buddy Brandon a text and he called me back and said he would be back to pick me up around lunch time with the trailer. No problem. I got back to the garage. Cleaned everything nice and spick and reinstalled it. Made sure that ALL of the threaded AN fittings were Cleaned out as steril as possible. Threaded them back in with Teflon tape, used my New wrench set specifically size 21 to get the problematic fitting all the way to the base, reinstalled my Oil filter, put the UIM back on. And started the car. Zero Leaks. I about screamed in joy. It took me about 45 min to do it correctly. So I backed out of the garage to clean the under carriage of the car and let her warm up so I could properly bleed the coolant system. Cleaned it up, pulled out my Lap top to see what was going on and checked the levels. AFR’s were good, All injectors were good, Vacuum had actually Risen on the new build, Fuel Pressure was good, Oil pressure was good… Time to Log a couple pulls. Took her up the street… Which I know people had to be thinking all sorts of thigns… But Stopped on the side of the road… water temp was good, oil temp was good… Things were better and better. Closed my lap top, jumped out of the car….got under it to look for leaks… NADA… jumped back in, put my harness on, closed my lap top,…Rev up dropped the clutch and plumed up the street, shifted into second with my stomach tightening up and it felt sooo good… came back around the corner parked my car on the driveway… opened my lap top… logged it. Turned the car off and got my car wash stuff out. Washed the car and dried it. Got all my gear ready as Brandon was pulling up. Loaded the car up, changed my shirt and shorts, washed my face and piled everything into my Prius and followed Brandon out to willow.
From here on out… All I can say is good times. It gave me chills to see the Wolf on the trailer in front of me heading out to ASB2014…and even as I type it’s eye welling. All the hard work, all the trouble to not just show up to ASB but show up with a car that was 100% solid enough to Beat on and not worry about dumb little things… Good times. I was so….and still am soo thankful the hard work paid off.

The Oil Filter Pedestal that was giving me so much trouble. Must've tried to seal it some 8-10 times Friday.

Part 2 “A sigh of relief”
And so The weekend went Very well. The car rips pretty hard and didn’t leak a damn drop. I went off course 4-5 times pushing myself, but realized after a while that as long as I followed someone with a good line….going off track was almost impossible. So I started doing just that. I Did square up Hit one of the Barriers on my drivers side. Luckily my wheel took the Brunt of it and there was no massive damage. Cracked my front drivers fender more, and didn’t even bother running my front bumper. On my last set of tires… Up on Horse Thief, I was getting pretty low and shredded my passenger side rear to the wires. I got off the access road to double check if I had a couple laps left….and I decided I would just take it easy. But a formidable group of drivers past by…and I had to try and follow them. So I gave them 6-7 Car lengths and tried to follow their lines. Was able to link the Up hill before the long cambered down hill left But wussed out… and good thing I did because coming up the last Right hander to the downhill in front of the water tower My Passenger side tire exploded. Flat tire. Limped off track and got back to the pits…swapped to a bald spare. Laughed and smiled some… Loaded the car up on Brandon’s trailer and called it a weekend to go down in the history books of my life as one of the best weekends of my life.
Off the trailer and home

Good job Aaron, chasing those leaks can be a major headache (in your case thats an understatement.) When it comes to tight time schedules desire to complete the task often works against you. You overwork yourself and start making mental mistakes, glad you pushed through though.

As a long time lurker and finally an FD owner, this thread is great . All of your writeups and updates are super inspirational- you have a great way of describing all the hard work, love, sweat & tears that goes into your car. Good to hear that you were able to fix your leaks and make it to the event!

Also props on the garage, so nice & clean

Thanks for the kind words. This past couple weeks have been crazy. A great story that ended up on the right side of the rainbow The garage is prime...keeping it clean is a priority and gives me a good foundation for solid work on the car.
