I ordered the 4.10 gears and Detroit Trutrac so I can finish up the 8.8 rear end and subframe install.
Also some vapor blasting I’ve been doing locally.
I’m lovin how it leaves a nice OEM finish… maybe a touch more shine than oem but that can be adjusted per media used.

Dayum, those parts look sexy! Next time I have my FD in pieces I'll have to ship a bunch of them out to you to get vapor blasted

Thx Dale…. It’s kinda therapeutic watching the carbon get cleaned away.
Here’s an old display rotor I had laying on the shelf.

That's an amazing time saver! If that video was done in real time, at just under 2 minutes per rotor face, it would take only about 6 minutes to do all faces, then perhaps another 4~6 minutes to get the each end face & bearing/center areas clean.

Yes Sir, that's real time,,, it cleans like a beast.
I need to do better job of taking before and after pics of parts.
Problem is I get too excited to blast something that I forget to take a before pic until I'm done.....lol

Waiting on the 8,8 diff and gear set to show up.

In the meantime, I vapor blasted my buddy's Mazdaspeed3 head.
Cleaned up really nice.. Time to get a better camera the pics don't do it justice..... he was very happy with the results
He's doing a complete rebuild w/bigger turbo and supporting mods on it.

Had to send the 4.10 R&P back.. wasn’t happy with it being a aftermarket R&P and talking with some buddies they were telling me they had issues when using a aftermarket replacement R&P. So I sent them back for a credit and bought the Ford Racing 4.10 R&P.

So now that I got it I can start the diff assembly.

Thumbs up Stevie’s R3 cat-back exhaust

Assisted Stevie in swapping the stock muffler and installing his new cat-back on Saturday.
It’s from eBay and the quality seems to be pretty decent for the price but time will tell how long it’ll last.
Overall it’s a nice improvement…gives the exhaust a lower tone but not much louder over stock when driving normal but it screams a full throttle! He’s happy 👍

Also one side note… most of these exhaust are made for the S1 RX-8 and when you install them on a S2 you’ll need to use longer exhaust hangers so to tips are not touching the rear plastic bumper.
We used these to allow the exhaust to hang about 1 1/2 lower. Work out great 👍

Looks good! I'll be interested to hear how it sounds in comparison to the Greddy I have on my RX-8.

So will it be you and Stevie in the 8 this year at DGRR? I have a feeling the 3 rotor won't be done in time

Will you be in the RX-8 or FD this year?
It'll be a neat exhaust comparison if you bring the 8, if not I think Rich has a Greddy on his 8 too.

Yeah, going to be Stevie and I in his 8 this year.... He's looking forward to driving me around up there!
No 3rotor FD, got way too much that needs to be done to it

Steve

8.8 Diff & Rear Subframe

it’s been awhile but here goes…. took a few pics of the Ford 8.8 diff build w/4.10 gear.
I followed the ford manual and several YouTube videos(lots of good info there) on setting up the diff… backlash, preload and gear pattern…. hopefully it doesn’t grenade it’s self… lol

Pressed in the new bearing and races from the kit.

Closed up

Back in the subframe ready to be reinstalled

Also gonna relocate the fuel filter to the rear subframe while it’s out.. what the hell was Mazda thinking stuffing it up above the subframe.
I changed it once and vowed to never do it again in that location.

Fuel filter relocation

As most FD owners know the stock location for the fuel filter is tucked way up between the body and subframe. It’s a pain to get to and Yes, there are write-ups on changing the filter which is great but I didn’t wanna deal with it in that location again. So here’s my solution and it doesn’t effect anything you can go back to stock location if wanted to.

I reused the stock fuel filter clamp, a long bolt with rubber bushing in an existing hole in the rear subframe. Then used about 12” of new fuel hose to reach the filter in its new location.

Nothing exciting to show but I did hack the air pump ear off.
Then pugged the coolant passage on the top(not pictured, thought I took one )

Thumbs up See ya at DGRR 2023 !!

So, I decided that I wanted to take my FD to the DGRR this year and now she’s all back together…. Man I really missed driving it

Just gotta recharge the a/c and get an alignment done.

The 3rotor DCT swap will still happen just at a later time.

See ya at DGRR!!

Is this an April Fools joke Steve? Seems like you had the car in a million pieces for the 3 rotor & DCT swap yesterday! Anyway, look forward to seeing you at DGRR, whatever you bring!

Nope.. not an April fools joke and yeah it was in a million pieces…lol

I had an opportunity to get a great deal on a short block from a buddy and jumped on it.
Also I still had everything else from before I tore it down so it was just a lot of reassemble it back together.
Sucked having it sit like garage decor and missing driving it!!
3 rotor swap will be later down the road. I’m about half way there with the parts needed to complete the swap but for the time being I’ll be able to enjoy her again.

Awesome build. Read your post on recharging your A/C, saw the V-mount and battery but didn't see the dryer in the pic, so went and read through from the beginning to see how you did it, lol. Your solution fits my needs exactly. I'm looking to convert to single soon and want a vmount and to keep the battery under the hood. I live in Texas so AC is a must. Glad I ran into this thread.
