jdm_planet on Ebay- BAD J-spec experience

I bought a S5 ('89-92) used Japanese engine (J-spec) from jdm_planet on ebay.

In short, the engine was missing the turbo to IC hose when they pressure washed it and the degreaser/water entered the engine causing the internal parts to rust.

Despite my documented complaints the seller has made no move to resolve the situation in anyway.

Here follows the correspondence and pictures exchanged w/ the seller.

Me-
Received engine-

Damaged intercooler beyond use
Damaged alternator and from '93 RX-7

Missing hose from turbo to intercooler.

Removed turbo to find engine combustion chambers full of rusty water (see above)

Engine NOT the one pictured despite of what auction stated.

I have not yet assessed whether the water inside the motor has damaged it- though the amount of rust color present is a very bad sign.

It appears it was pressure washed with missing IC hose and water entered the engine.

I will be contacting you again soon, Ian Sharp.

hi there

well all of our engine they are washed up before we send them
from montreal canada to usa...there is no problem with it..

the engine is in good shape..well the hoses are always cut..when
they take out from the cars..

well parts like alternator or intercooler you can use ur old ones..or the hoses too

anyway let me know

thanks
Me-
I will send you pictures tomorrow!

The motor is NOT in good shape.

It is full of rust, water and detergent on the inside. The turbo, housings and seals and everything are rusty on the inside.

How this happened was someone pressure washed the engine with the hose missing between the IC and turbo and water and detergent entered the engine through the intake ports.

A full cup or more of rusty water and detergent ran out of the engine once I had the turbo off and turned the flywheel.

whats wrong which parts are bad..

i can figure out whats wrong with the throttle body or ???

thanks get back to me
Me-
The intercooler had water in it
the throttle body had water in it
the turbo has rusty water in it
the engine has rusty water in it

Where did the rust come from in the water?

It is from the internal engine parts rusting.

The inside of the rotor housings are rusty.
The inside of the side housings are rusty.
The rotors are rusty.
The apex seals are rusty.
The side seals are rusty.
The corner seals are rusty.

hi there,,

well let me explain you something..
first of all most of the engine before we buy from japan they are outside in the yard under the rain, snow etc..before we ship them to canada.the water you find inside the intercooler it doesnt damages anything or the motor ..we have to wash the engine before we send them from canada to usa..or it wont pass inside usa..

rusty its from outside pipes that are open, without any covers..or covered . not from inside the motor ..i have seen many other motors like that..but engine from inside its completely clean and after all these motors are used motors..but i am telling you can do ahead with the installation ..motor from inside its clean..i seen the motor by my self..wont sell a bad motors on ebay man you can check my reputation on ebay..

i am being doing this business for almost 10 yrs..so there is nothing to worry about..
I took off the intake manifold, took these pictures and emailed them to jdm_planet as well.

You'd have to spray a LOT of water into the IC/throttlebody to get it to make it's way into the engine via the intake manifold. After all, the intake runners sit a good 6 inches above the bottom of the throttlebody. Water would just get in there and pool up and run back out the open throttlebody elbow. Even if the elbow was on there, you'd have to spray almost a gallon of water to fill the throttlebody and UIM to the point where water would overflow into the runners and down into the engine.

But, this may have been what happened, as there is undeniably a bit of water in the intake port.

It's more likely that it was a water seal motor (why the car was junked to begin with) and the water simply got sloshed into the intake port by the rotor being spun over for a poor man's compression test etc.

Either way it's shitty, but the guy doesnt seem to be able to speak good enough english to make him understand. Sometimes I wonder of that's the case, if the person really can't speak english well, or if they're just ACTING that way so that you will think they are dumb and leave them alone.

I have a fairly strong southern accent from what I am told, and I hate trying to talk (in person or on the phone) to some foreigner who can't understand regular english, much less southern english, and then me try to understand his mix of english and whatever else. A lot of times it's not even worth the trouble.

Yeah, there was ~1/8 cup water in the intercooler, traces in the TB, intake manifold and a cup or more in the engine.

I theorized that it was carelessly pressure washed without the missing turbo to IC hose and water got in the IC, it later ended up resting cocked to the rear turbo side and the water found its way past the primary plate (idle air circuit?).

This might explain why the rust was most pronounced in the rear primary port.

However, if it was carelessly pressure washed it is just as or more likely they sprayed into the backside of the turbo and filled the engine through the exhaust ports.

I don't believe it was due to coolant seal leak as the coolant was brilliant dark green (anti-corrosive) and the rusty water in the engine felt and smelled like degreaser.

I suppose I will find out when I take it apart to see what I can still use with clean up.
