Stick to cars, your better at it.

I don't think it makes you look prophetic. More like a insensitive bigot.

My comment wasn't directed at you Mahjik, but the hypocritical stance of the forum. "No... homophobic... remarks," but here's some smileys you can use to make fun of someone by insinuating they're gay.

Either way this thread has gone far off topic. I'll restrain from posting more thoughts or opinions.

And women by these?

If that's not deemed offensive then where do we draw the line?

I'm not saying that the thread starter should have posted that comment or that we should eliminate those smileys, but I think everyone needs to regain their sense of humor and understanding (up to a limit of course).
While I personally find that many of the smilies provided are just plain stupid, I do not go out of my way to censor everything I see that is against the letter of forum law. Because we all know how ridiculous that exercise would be.

I look into things when posts are reported. Racial stuff (seeing as we regularly have hate postings in here on a semi-regular basis) is something I do take seriously, even in small doses. I don't know very many people here personally, so I don't know people's ethnicity. Nor should I need to.

My point is that we all know when we're using terms that are offensive, and that it's really not hard to stick to the subject of RX-7s.

Really? Just because I don't appreciate the race lectures on a car forum or being told by Mahjik that because I don't appreciate the race talks that I think Muslims are all terrorists?

7racer, go back to school and learn something. Try to pay attention this time.

Mahjik, you have no idea what my opinion is on racial issues or Muslims or a million other things. When you write in your post what I think about Muslims, it is vacuous.

A lot of attention was drawn to this thread because people made a big deal of the original post. It would have been better handled by a PM requesting that the poster refrain from using the term in the future. Keeps the thread on the main subject and prevents inflammatory words like bigot and racist from being tossed about.

I am done with this thread, if anyone wants to discuss it further, PM.

Absolutely, I don't. It was reaffirming the point that making generalizations is a "bad thing", which you just proved. So, saying "afro engineered" which is implying that black people can't design/make anything right is also a "bad thing" which brings us back to the original point (once again).

Once again, I don't believe the original poster meant any harm or really thought about what he was typing. The problem is people hear thesr sayings and just repeat them without really thinking about what they mean. They are unknowningly perpetuating old racial slurs unconsciously.

It seems you hadn't been reading the entire thread. The original poster had already apologized, it was a few other members (such as yourself) keeping the conversation going.

I personally don't think the original poster meant any harm by what he said. However, that's the education that people can gain, from such a situation, for a greater understanding of other cultures. Now, if someone said/wrote something like that and then said "I don't care if you don't like it, I'm going to keep saying it" then that is other story. Unfortunately, a lot of people grow up in areas where they aren't exposed to other cultures so they just simply don't know any better.

While this is a "car forum" it is made up of many different cultures. People use words to communicate on this forum but those words can have many different reasonings/definitions/intents depending on the culture.

Trying going down to Compton and saying "Come here boy". That would have a different result than saying something like that to your friends. The word "Boy" on it's own is not a bad word, however it's the intent behind it which can make it something hurtful to someone else.

JESUS H. CHRIST! This is as bad as when Hazel O'Leary (Then DOE Head) stopped a engineering presentation on the Defense Waste Processing Facility because the Arm that moved a component for the assembly was called a "Master/Slave Manipulator". GET OVER IT

Mahjik, I have to applaud you for speaking out so clearly on a very touchy subject. It really is amazing how so many people are totally insensitive to how racial terms come across. Just because someone does not act offended by hearing or seeing some of these phrases, does not mean that they weren't. It may just mean that they don't want to stir things up further.
