Question Whoosing sound..

Hi guys,

My car is making a strange whoosing sound, like air escaping.. At first i thought the obvious, an IC pipe connection somewhere so i pulled them all and they seemed fine.

The car doesnt make any strange noises at idle but between 10ish and 0 inHG it will make a whooshing sound that then goes away as soon as the turbo spools up. Done a search and a couple of people have suggested the DP is cracked or the gasket is buggered.. Boost also seems to come on quite late, not reaching 12psi (series 7 JDM) until around 3500+ rpm. Could this be the problem?

Any suggestions where to look? i dont wanna go pulling this thing out, ive heard its not a fun job...

Cheers

It still sounds like a boost leak. Something is cracked/split or not secured well enough. Anything that pertains to holding boost recheck. From the Y-pipe to the intercooler hoses, intercooler and to elbow. It can be a pain to identify cracks in the accordian style piping. . G

Yea it feels slightly slower than it used to, or maybe im just used to it now?

Its definately not the IC piping, i have an SMIC, not the factory one so i have checked all the connections. It doesnt feel like boost is leaking, i know that one too because i had a connection come off.

Not trying to insult you, but you never know how much someone knows. Are you sure it's not your blowoff valve?

Have you started the car, popped the hood, and then stood over the engine and manually revved the engine? You'll see the pipes pressurize momentarily, and you can most definitely here boost leaks much better this way. This is how I found my Y pipe to crossover duct broken coupler.

Try this - warm the car up and then shut it off. Remove the elbow going into the Throttle body. Re-start the engine. Have somebody sit inside the cabin and rev it up while you hold your hand over the intercooler hose outlet. This will create backpressure and your leak will be revealed. Rev it to around 2500 - 3500 rpms.

Sometimes these hose splits cannot be found easily. They close back up and everything looks normal. Also what happens a lot is a hose will slide off it's rolled lip because the stock clamp was not re-installed right.

good luck and let us know what you found.

I looked over my setup when I was having a similar problem and quickly dismissed the possibility of a boost leak. You really cant be sure till you get every coupler and rubber hose off and deform then and manipulate them. It will take you an hour tops, just take the time and you can be sure that isnt one of the problems.

There are only 4 though, as my car is a 97 it came with a flange type connector on the y-pipe, and i have an SMIC installed.. So there are only 4 small joiners all of which i ahve checked. The other thing i noticed today when i gave it a good WOT, it is making a sound which i found to be very similar to an ext wastegate... just trying to give some idea of what it sounded like, it wasnt loud, but it was there. I will try record it.

*bump*

I just noticed a similar sound in mine, a solid "whoosh" of air being sucked in, while seeing lower than normal boost (.5 bar, slowly creeping to .75 bar.. as opposed to a very fast .85-.9 bar).

I'm taking my car in to a specialty shop (www.reworx.com) next week for some other *possible* issues before a BNR install..
