CA 2nd gen 88 having loud scrape like sound..

My rx7 is making some unusual sound.. The video im about to show up is a glimpse of what it sounds like. Probably the weirdest comparison i can think of but it's the best i got.. 'A COCONUT GETTING SCRAPED'.. I put this here because it's not really like a grind sound.. or a rubbing.. but a loud version of this video..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWEJgq1uM54

P.S. i thought it was low oil in the differential.. but its not not. It was very low and became more noticeable.. and now its pretty loud. Any ideas on what it is? any common problems? like the 3800 rpm hesitation or something.. its not in the motor.. somewhere in the rear.

Wheel bearings? Jack up the back and see if you can turn the wheels freely by hand. Could be your diff even if the oil's not low - I came across one in the salvage yard with the clutch limited slip, I was going to grab it, but it turned out the diff was probably why it was there - when I tried to turn it, it was extremely stiff, and a low grumbly-growly sound came from it.

ic, damn i hope it's not the differential.. my cars an 88 so i got lsd despite whether its a GXL or not.. My buddy, is a rotary mechanic. He did say the wheel bearings is going out but it was barely making any noise at the time when he noticed it. It could be that it's super bad now. haha. I'm hoping so. Good thing you mentioned that. I forgot that could have been the problem. I'll go check it out tomorrow and see if thats the exact problem. Thanks mann..

P.s. You said you came across one like that at a junk? The car even fired up?? and yeah our cars wheel is suppose to turn pretty damn smooth. Although, you can only here the sound when your actually driving. I'll get back to you on it though. thanks again.

No, the pick-n-pull car was not a runner, I spun the rear axles with the wheels - only instead of turning the opposite side wheel the same direction, as a lsd should, or spinning it the opposite direction, as a open diff will, it wouldnt turn the opposite wheel, and audibly and by feel it felt rumbly.
If your car was already diagnosed as having a bad wheel bearing, I'd definitely lean that way. I had one go on my the front of the wife's Saturn daily driver last year, gave a sound similar to what you describe.

I had some horrible scraping when the U joints in my driveshaft were finally done. Kinda sounded like that coconut vid. Get the back end jacked up and start spinning things.

If it was the U joints there would probably be a clank engaging some gears. You would also feel a noticeable wobble, increasing as they got worse.
My second one went out recently and was trying to shake my arm clear off the shifter lol.
Never hurts to check though

Cool man thanks for your input as well. Thats some good news i would say. Pretty sure its just the wheel bearing then. I jacked it up last night and spinning the rear right side wheel, i can hear the noise slightly. I'm sure as it got faster it would be the problem. I'm going to look more into it before i go class. I'll come back here and let you guys know whats up.

I took apart the half shaft and the inner bearings. There was only 5 bearings but there is 6 slots. So i thought that was the problem. It's not though, it's the wheel bearing which is gonna get picked up soon.
